Delta State Governor and PDP’s Vice Presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa has revealed that five casualties have been recorded from various communities in the state as the flood continues to ravage.

Okowa who visited some of the Internally Displaced Persons IDP camps where people were been camped as a result of the flood disaster, Okowa urged the federal government to build new dams and desilt major rivers to check flooding, especially when neighboring countries opened their dams.

The governor, visited camps at Ogbe-Afor Primary School, Oneh Primary School in Asaba, and Ewulu Mixed Grammar School, Ewulu, in Aniocha South Local Government Area.

He said the best way to end the loss of life and valuables to flood was for the government to take proactive steps towards stalling perennial flooding each time neighboring countries opened their dams.

Okowa commiserated with those who lost persons and property to the flood, he stated that 11 holding camps have been established to take care of those displaced by the flood.

The flood is currently affecting people and properties in state’s like Adamawa, Anambra, Gombe, Jigawa, parts of Kaduna, Kogi, Niger, Delta, Benue, Nasarawa.

The adverse effects of the flood in Nigeria includes loss of human life, property and infrastructure damage, road closures, erosion, and landslide risks.
