The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) suspended the labour strike they embarked upon on Monday, June 4, 2024, for five days.

The industrial action halted activities in almost every sector of the economy: education, health, oil and gas, power, and transportation, to mention a few.

The aim of the strike, which began on Monday, was to protest the failure of the Federal Government to approve a new minimum wage by May 31 as well as its failure to reverse the hike in electricity tariffs.

However, after a six-hour meeting with the leadership of organised labour in Abuja on Monday night, the Federal Government expressed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu to raising the ₦60,000 offered as the minimum wage.

The agreement stated that President Tinubu would establish a minimum wage higher than ₦60,000.

Based on this agreement reached by both parties, the outcome after the five-day suspension could go both ways.

However, if you don’t want to be caught unawares, here are three things you should do within this five-day period.

Stock-Up

Now is a good time to top up food supplies, toiletries, fuel, and other items needed to run your day-to-day activities.

This is because there is a possibility of commodity scarcity and price increases after the 5-day ultimatum, depending on the final outcome of the labour union negotiation.

Run Errands

Have you been postponing going to the bank or government agencies to make necessary transactions or documentations?

How about that important doctor’s appointment you have been skipping?

Whichever activity you have to carry out in any institution, whether school, health, and so on, now is the time to take it more seriously.

You never know when next you will have the chance to.

Support

It is no news that within the short period of over 24 hours that the NLC and TUC strike lasted, many people and businesses have been affected.
