The court however claims that the ban was a violation of human rights as the couples who brought the case, claimed the law was discriminatory.

As it stands, Japan is the only one of the Group of Seven (G7) nations that does not recognize and approve of same-sex marriage.

One of the lawyers involved in the case, Nobuhito Sawasaki, described the ruling as a fairly positive one.

“While marriage remains between a man and a woman, (the court) also said that the current situation with no legal protection for same-sex families is not good, suggesting something must be done about it, “ he told Reuters.

Currently, Japan’s constitution does not allow same-sex couples to inherit each other’s assets and are denied parental rights to each other’s children.
