Early morning crash shuts down traffic on Lagos-Ibadan expressway

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Wednesday said an early morning accident involving two articulated trucks at the Kara Bridge end of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway caused a total shutdown of traffic.

Advertisements

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Federal Government on Tuesday resumed traffic diversion on the Kara Bridge section of the highway to continue reconstruction of the ever-busy corridor.

Explaining the cause of the gridlock being experienced on the highway by motorists and commuters a day after traffic diversion started, Mr Samuel Obayemi, the FRSC Zonal Commanding Officer, Zone RS2, comprising Lagos and Ogun, attributed the crash to impatience.

Advertisements

Obayemi, who frowned at the recklessness of some road users, urged motorists to be cautious of the diversion and exercise patience.

“A crash at the Kara end of Lagos-Ibadan expressway outward Lagos has caused a total shutdown of traffic going outside Lagos.

“JBN (Julius Berger Nigeria Plc) has been contacted and they are on the ground to remove the barriers that will aid the easy entrance of a tow-truck.

“FRSC, Nigeria Police, LASTMA (Lagos State Traffic Management Authority), TRACE (Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps) are on the ground managing the traffic.”

Obayemi said the recovery operations were ongoing to free the traffic and return normalcy to the corridor.

According to him, road users should avoid any haste when approaching diversion sections so as not to cause pains to other users

War Threats: Iran minister hints on new deal with world powers, Trump

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Javad Zarif, said on Wednesday that an existing nuclear deal the country struck with world powers was not dead

Advertisements

He said he was unsure if any new pact agreed by U.S. President Donald Trump would last.

“The United States didn’t implement (the existing deal’s) …commitments, now it has withdrawn.

“I had a U.S. deal and the U.S. broke it.

“If I have a Trump deal, how long will it last?’’ Mohammad Javad Zarif said at a security conference in New Delhi.

Zarif added that Iran is interested in diplomacy, but not in negotiating with the U.S, adding the existing pact was among the “best deals” he could envisage, NAN reports.

Zarif spoke a day after Britain, France and Germany formally accused Iran of violating the terms of that agreement.

The leaders of Britain, France and Germany had earlier sent a message to Iran, calling on it to return to full compliance with a 2015 nuclear deal with world powers and refrain from further violence.

Tensions between the two countries have risen following the U.S. killing of Iranian military commander Gen. Qassem Soleimani and a retaliatory missile attack by Iran on U.S. forces in Iraq.

US vs Iran: President Donald Trump under attack for causing crisis in Middle East

US President Donald Trump has come under fire for engineering all the crises coming in the Middle East.

Advertisements

During the last debate before the first votes are cast in the 2020 presidential primary, Democratic candidates on Tuesday attacked Trump for pulling out of the Nuclear deal with Iran and for ordering the assassination of Iranian army general, Qassem Soleimani.

Most of the Democrat presidential aspirants promised to stop Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon while vowing to try re-entering the landmark nuclear deal Trump discarded.

The presidential hopefuls castigated Trump for inflaming tensions with Tehran.

Ex-Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Klobuchar, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg blast Trump accusing him of inflaming conflict by pulling out of the deal.

Advertisements

Sanders accused the President of lying about planned Soleimani attack.

Klobuchar said, “Because of the actions of Donald Trump, we are now in a situation where Iran is starting to enrich uranium again, in violation of the original agreement.”

Biden suggested Trump was to blame for increased Iranian aggression, adding, “I was part of that deal to get the nuclear agreement with Iran, bringing together the rest of the world, including some of the folks who aren’t friendly to us.

“And it was working. It was being held tightly. There was no movement on the part of the Iranian government to get nuclear weapons. And look what’s happened: It was predictable from the day he pulled out of the agreement what would happen.”

Buttigieg said he would not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon, should be become president, and said the drone strike killing Solemani “set off the chain of events that we’re now dealing with as it escalates even closer to the brink of outright war.”

The candidates praised the Obama-led 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, as the Iran deal is formally known, and said they would try to re-enter the accord or negotiate a new one, according to CNN.

“I would start negotiations again and I won’t take that as a given, given that our European partners are still trying to hold the agreement together,” said Klobuchar.

“I would not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon, and then you have to get an agreement in place,” she added. “I think there are changes you can make to the agreement… but overall, that is what we should do.”

The debate was held at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa to discuss their positions on matters of war and peace

Sanders said that while he opposed an Iraq war that was “based on lies,” Biden trumpeted the effort.

“I thought they were lying,” Sanders said of the Bush administration’s justifications for it in 2002.

“I didn’t believe them for a moment. Joe saw it differently.”

Biden said he acknowledged years ago that it was a “mistake to go to war,” but he largely declined to clash with Sanders over Iraq.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that “Operation Zero Tolerance” started in Dec. 16, 2019 and would end on Jan.19.

The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Mrs Uche Chukwurah, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Ibadan.

Chukwurah said that out of those arraigned before a mobile court at Apata, Ibadan, 37 were convicted and six others cautioned and discharged.

She said that the exercise was to check the activities of recalcitrant motorists by enforcing traffic rules and regulations, enlightening motorists and ensuring free flow of traffic on the highways during and after the Yuletide.

“The operation is also to ensure that drunk drivers and those suspected to have consumed illicit drugs are taken off the roads.

“The FRSC has fully commenced the testing of drivers suspected to have taken alcoholic drinks before embarking on a journey,’’ she said.

Chukwurah said that a few number of road traffic crashes and casualties were recorded since the commencement of the ongoing special operation.

She cautioned motorists and other road users to refrain from unsafe practices or attitudes that could jeopardise their safety on the highways in 2020.

Chukwurah also said the corps would continue to enlighten the motoring public through various programmes such as Early Morning Cry at motor parks as well as public enlightenment sessions in places of worship and schools.

“The FRSC in Oyo State will continue to work in synergy with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the safety of all road users in the stat,” she said.
