The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) says an audio message circulating on social media in which inhabitants of the southeast were asked to observe a one-week sit-at-home from July 3 to July 10 is not from the group.

This repudiation was made on Wednesday by the spokesman for IPOB, Mr Emma Powerful.

IPOB says the audio is fake.

The reported IPOB sit-at-home, with the hashtag #FreeNnamdiKanu, is intended to force the Federal Government to free Nnamdi Kanu.

He was detained by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The voice message stated that anyone who ventures out on the specified dates will face severe repercussions.

But IPOD is asking residents in the region to ignore the message.

“You must know who madness sit-at-home is, as well as the criminal who is destroying our land illegally.

“I will issue an official press release against it in two to three days to the date declared in the audio.

“But for now, the leadership (of IPOB) has asked me not to give it attention or attraction,” he said.

IPOB had declared every Monday in the South East a sit-at-home day in order to push the Federal Government to release its leader Kanu.

They, however, discontinued it on the grounds that the activity was harming the region’s economy.

Despite IPOB’s assurances, some hoodlums have continued to enforce it since its cancellation, forcing many to sit at home every Monday.

Simon Ekpa, a section leader of the organisation headquartered in Finland, has consistently backed the Monday exercise.

He was said to have threatened the governors of Anambra and Enugu, Prof Chukwuma Soludo and Mr Peter Mbah, who had spoken out and cancelled the exercise in their respective states.
