The Nigerian political space is dominated by men and only recently have we seen the inclusion of more women.

However, despite the recent increase, many consider the inclusion of women in governance in Nigeria very low.

One such group is the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC).

IPAC at a workshop organised for political parties by the Nigeria Women Trust Fund (NWTF) has called for the inclusion of more women in politics.

IPAC Chairman Yabagi Sani at the event emphasised the importance of women’s participation in governance.

“If we must applaud political development, then women must be involved,” Sani says.

“By design, we are supposed to be, if not equal partners, at least equity should be introduced in how the presentation is made in our politics, in the governance, even in the rally of political parties,” he adds.

Women’s Participation In Election

Sani decries the low level of female representation at the National Assembly urging political parties to do better in future elections.

Furthermore, he adds that women were already occupying sensitive leadership positions globally.

Similarly, the Executive Director, of Women Empowerment and Reproductive Health Centre Ejiro Otive-Igbuzor encourages women to participate in politics.

She notes that laws and policies were the most effective ways to achieve the inclusion of more women in governance.

According to Otive-Igbuzor, legislators had to make specific recommendations during lawmaking on female representation in government to yield results.

“We need to push for the implementation of those laws.

“If our electoral laws had recommendations that political parties must represent a certain per cent of females, women not being represented in politics would have been bygones,” she adds.

The low interest of women in elections has been attributed to many reasons including cultural and religious factors.
