Executives at Google’s annual developers conference in Silicon Valley announced that generative AI will also be used to boost the tech giant’s leading search engine.

Reimagining Core Products

“We’ve been using AI for a while; with generative AI, we’re taking the next step,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai told the thousands of developers in attendance.

“We are completely reimagining all of our core products, including search,” he said.

Google is chasing rival Microsoft, which has rushed to incorporate ChatGPT-like capabilities into a wide range of its products, including the Bing search engine.

Microsoft’s rush into AI came despite concerns about the technology’s potential societal risks, such as its impact on the spread of misinformation and whether it could render entire job categories obsolete.

According to Cathy Edwards of Google Search, the new experience will be similar to a search “supercharged” by a conversational bot.

Other Google executives detailed how generative AI is being integrated into Gmail, photo editing, online work tools, and other products.

Bard Supporting 40 Languages

“The company’s AI efforts will be bold and responsible,” said senior product director Jack Krawczyk during a briefing.

Following months of testing in the United States and the United Kingdom, Google removed the Bard waitlist, allowing users all over the world to interact with it in English.

Also, countries that do not use English as their official language will be incorporated.

According to Krawczyk, “Bard will be updated to support 40 languages in the coming months.

“We’re really excited to get Bard into more people’s hands.

“We’re pretty fired up about where Bard is going.

More Possibilities For Creators

“Google also announced browser “extensions” that will add AI capabilities to apps and services like Gmail and Maps.

“Filling in text to help draft emails and suggesting artwork ideas by scrutinising a picture of available supplies will be possible with Bard technology.

“Google is also letting partners build such extensions, including one from Adobe that will allow users to generate images, Krawczyk explained.

“Google unveiled new Pixel devices, including a $1,799 foldable smartphone with a bendable screen that opens to the size of a tablet computer.

“You’re getting the best of both worlds,” said Rick Osterloh, Senior Vice President of Devices at Google.

“It’s a powerful smartphone when it’s convenient, and an immersive tablet when you need one,” he said.

Lower-priced Pixel

Google also expanded the Pixel lineup with a new tablet and a lower-priced version of its flagship smartphone.

Google’s announcements come just a week after Microsoft opened up public access to its generative artificial intelligence programs, which are powered by OpenAI models, the company behind ChatGPT.

“This could be a defining moment in the AI battle, with Google and Microsoft going head-to-head for market share, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives wrote in an investor note.

“Microsoft’s early investment in OpenAI gave it a head start in this Game of Thrones Battle for Big Tech, with Google now playing major catch-up mode.

“AI-enhanced features of Microsoft’s Bing search engine and Edge internet browser were recently made available to the public.

“The services have been enhanced to work with images in addition to text, and Microsoft plans to add video to the mix.

“Despite the rollouts by two of the world’s largest corporations, risks from AI include the potential use of voice clones, deep-fake videos, and convincing written messages for disinformation.” the analyst said.

In March, a group of experts urged a halt in the development of powerful AI systems to ensure their safety.

Their open letter, signed by over 1,000 people including billionaire Elon Musk and Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak, was prompted by Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s generative AI technology.

A prominent computer scientist known as “the godfather of artificial intelligence” recently resigned from Google to speak out about the technology’s dangers.

Geoffrey Hinton, who developed some of the technology that underpins AI systems, believes that the existential threat posed by AI is “serious and close.”
