Goods Worth Millions Destroyed As Fire Guts Balogun Market

Shop owners were coming to Balogun Market in Lagos in the morning to open for business, but not many of them were aware they walking into what will end as a black Tuesday. 

“Fire, fire, fire”, people around the market continued to scream, as the inferno grows in bounds, devouring the labour of men.

The enthusiasm for sales melted away, swallowed up by the quest to save something from the shops.

Balogun Market on Lagos Island is a popular market. Unfortunately, one of the things that happen to that market is fire outbreak.

In this particular one, properties and goods worth millions of Naira have been destroyed.

The fire razed a plaza in the market where Ladies’ shoes are sold.

Firefighters from two divisions of Lagos Fire Service were deployed to the scene to put out the fire.

There was no causality recorded. However, there is panic presently around the area as balls of fire billowed and smokes enveloped the skyline.

The reoccurring outbreak of fire in Lagos market is one that has sparked concern by Nigerians.

As at the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

But when contacted, a fire service official, Margaret Adeseye, says the situation had been brought under control as at 10.30 am.

Adeseye is the Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

”The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is currently attending to a fire outbreak at the famous Balogun Market which involved the topmost floor of a five-storey building.

“The Fire is, however, under control as mitigation are on to limits it spread.”
