Prosecutors in Germany said on Wednesday that they arrested seven people for allegedly gathering money to deliver to the Islamic State organisation in Syria.

According to the federal prosecutor’s office, the four Germans, a German-Moroccan dual national, one Kosovar, and a Turkish citizen, were part of “an international network that supported the terrorist activities of the Islamic State in Syria through financial donations.”

Prosecutors claim that beginning in 2020, the group utilised the Telegram messaging application to solicit donations.

Their network includes Financial intermediaries who “collected money or set up accounts” for the gifts.

The funds were transferred from these accounts to IS members in Syria or to designated middlemen.

Prosecutors said the cash were used to sustain IS members incarcerated in northern Syrian camps and, in some cases, to help finance their escape.

Through the network, 65,000 euros ($69,367) were collected in total.

Prosecutors claimed the seven accused functioned as financial intermediaries and had a “central role” in the fundraising group.

The arrests were part of a nationwide crackdown on persons who had donated to IS through the organisation.
