The death of the late former Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, was one of the major headlines of 2023, despite coming at the end of the year.
Like every other major headline, Nigerian bloggers and journalists did not fail in milking the story.
What many saw was just an opportunity to maximise their earnings and also gather clicks and engagement.
Different versions of the story flooded the internet. It became worse as the state government and the deceased family made efforts to withhold information from the public, leaving many bloggers with no option but to device other means of obtaining information, including guesswork or predictions.
Lagos or Germany, Where Did Akeredolu Die?
It was not until Akeredolu’s remains arrived in Nigeria that many people began asking questions.
Where did the former Governor die?
Did Akeredolu return to the country after his first medical leave?

These and many other questions have left many in confusion.
Why all this questions, you may begin to wonder, out of curiosity. Well, the reason is not farfetched.
You see, shortly after Akeredolu’s demise, many reports claimed he died in Lagos State.
Shortly after, another report revealing that he passed away in Germany emerged.
Surprisingly, the remains of the late former Governor, who was reported to have died in Lagos, was received from Germany by his family on Friday.
‘Wonders shall never end’, many had whispered.
‘So Akeredolu died in two countries’, others concluded.
The Return
Late Akeredolu knew that his health was not in good condition, hence, the need to leave the country.
Of a truth, no sane Nigerian with financial resources would choose to receive medical treatment in Nigeria.
Even our politicians do not make such mistakes.
The ailing governor immediately took a medical leave and off he went to Germany.
We cannot say for sure if Akeredolu’s medical leave went as planned, as it was trailed with pressure from left, right and center.
Numerous power mongers seized the opportunity and called for his resignation.
Three months later, it was reported that Akeredolu was back to Nigeria and would be running state affairs from Ibadan.
Nobody ever confirmed seeing the late Governor during this period of time.
In fact, it was later exposed that the governor’s signature was being forged on some documents.
Now you see why many persons began doubting if Akeredolu ever returned to Nigeria.
Another confirmation is the fact that no one heard or saw when he was moved to Germany again as it was widely claimed.
It was only heard that he died in Germany and on Friday his corpse arrived in Nigeria from Germany.
Nigerians now say politicians can lie unto death.
