While some Nigerians are lamenting not being able to get their voter card, foreigners are carrying cards with reckless abandon.

As the 2023 election approaches, there is a high level of security awareness in Nigeria.

The Nigerian security agencies are monitoring every activity going on in different states.

They are at borders locations to avoid any acts of compromise or sabotage against national security or the electoral process.

One security agency in the forefront of this move fight is the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).

They are doing their best to ensure foreigners and minors do not vote in the upcoming election.

The NIS says it has confiscated 6,216 permanent voter cards from non-Nigerians across the states.

This information comes, as the NIS holds election retreat in Abuja.

At the retreat, the controller general of immigration, Isah Idris, said the NIS recently arrested foreigners who in possession of two documents only meant for Nigerian citizens.

Secure Entry And Exit Points

They have been handed over to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to delist them.

According to  him, 3,823 national identity cards and 2,381 voter cards have been seized and confiscated so far.

He explained that the voter cards and ID cards were recovered from 21 states.

Basically, the states are those that share borders with other West African countries.

Some of the states are Kebbi, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Niger,  Plateau, Sokoto, Cross River, Taraba and Bauchi.

Others are Edo, Adamawa, Akwa-Ibom, Nasarawa, Yobe, Zamfara, and Kwara.

“May I also use this opportunity to commend the various command controllers who eased out irregular migrants in their commands as a result of various immigration offenses?” he said.

He added that efforts are in top gear to mobilise NIS personnel to secure all entry and exit points before and during the election.

“This period calls for the highest level of insecurity awareness among all personnel. Any acts of compromise shall be treated as sabotage against our national security.”

“The NIS has placed personnel on vigilance to ensure only eligible citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria participate in the electoral process.

According to him, the NIS is on high alert to identify, arrest, and prevent foreigners from participating in the election.

This will guard against any possible obstruction of the peaceful conduct of the election process.”
