With 25 million Nigerians at high risk of hunger, the Nigerian government educated farmers on sustainable agricultural practices such as agroforestry, biologically integrated farming systems, and precision farming.

In a bid to curb hunger and reduce foodflation in the land, farmers have called for all hands to be on deck.

The President of Community Allied Farmers Association of Nigeria (COMAFAS), Dr Austine Maduka, made the call at the ongoing fifth Nigeria International Agriculture Expo.

He said, Nigeria’s population has grown over time and the people need to be fed.

The expo was themed: “Rethinking paradigm shift in agriculture initiative to improve yield, and achieve food security in Nigeria”.

We Can Curb Food Insecurity

COMAFAS president, said it became necessary for all hands to be on deck towards making Nigeria self-sufficient in agriculture, as we plan to diversify the economy from oil.

Maduka noted that the conference was coming at a right time as it would help generate new strategies to address challenges growers, processors and marketers face.

He also expressed COMAFAS, commitment towards making Nigeria a self-sufficient agrarian nation.

According to him, we need to tackle the challenge of producing more food with fewer resources and waste less.

Furthermore, Maduka, explained that there are four levels to food security which are: food availability, food access, food use and quality, and food stability.

Agriculture contributes more to the GDP than some other sectors, and so if we have more people investing and participating in the sector, we can do more.

To reap the benefits of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), we need to standardize the quality of products we produce in Nigeria.

If only we can start exporting our agricultural produce abroad, it will help the sector contribute more to the GDP and grow the economy.
