EFCC Invites Godwin Akpabio Over Multi-Billion Naira Fraud

Godswill Akpabio, a former minister of Niger Delta affairs, has been invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to reports, they will quiz him on allegations of misuse of authority and theft of billions of Naira.

Allegations of 40 billion Naira in fraud had allegedly been committed in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC),

It is an agency that Akpabio oversaw for three years.

The EFCC wants Akpabio to appear at its office on the March 29, 2023.

This is an information gotten from Akpabio’s lawyer, Umeh Kalu.

It was reported in 2021 how the senator-elect was detained after he attempted to bribe the Chairman of the anti-graft agency, Abdulrasheed Bawa with $350,000 (about 135 million Naira).

Different Allegations 

The Senate and the House of Representatives in 2020 resolved to probe the alleged 40 billion Naira financial recklessness of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the NDDC in the previous three months.

According to sources, Akpabio was trying to bribe the EFCC Chairman because of the tons of corruption allegations against him, dating back to the time he was governor of Akwa Ibom State.

It was discovered that Abubakar Malami, the federation’s attorney general and minister of justice, set up the encounter between Akpabio and Bawa.

Bawa is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

Furthermore, there were allegations of over 86 billion Naira contract scam involving the senator-elect and the former Acting Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Professor Kemebradikumo Pondei, which the EFCC has been looking into.

The anti-graft agency had in the past arrested Godwin Akpabio over alleged theft of 108.1 billion Naira of Akwa Ibom funds.
