Google, Microsoft, Others React To Uganda LGBTQ Legislation

Last week, Uganda’s parliament passed an anti-LGBTQ legislation.

The legislation would make identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer, a criminal offence.

Many have spoken against this ban and one of these is a coalition of international companies that includes Google and Microsoft.

The Open for Business coalition denounced the anti-LGBTQ legislation.

Bad For Business

According to the coalition, the legislation would damage the East African country’s economy.

The coalition also warn that the anti-LGBTQ bill would curb investment flows and deter tourists.

The bill imposes the death penalty for those who commit ‘aggravated homosexuality’ which is said to be same-sex relations with people under the age of 18.

It may also be when the perpetrator is HIV positive, among other categories.

However, President Yoweri Museveni is yet to sign the bill.

He has also not yet commented on the bill, although he signed a similar law in 2014.

The 2014 law provoked international condemnation before it was voided by a domestic court on procedural grounds.
