Nigerians will never forget in a hurry the June 12, 1993, elections that was won by the flag bearer of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), M.K.O. Abiola, but annulled by the General Ibrahim Babangida.

That election was adjudged the freest and fairest election to have ever been conducted in Nigeria.

Tinubu’s Maiden Democracy Day Address

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while addressing Nigerians explained that he was not unaware of the pains caused by the subsidy removal to the pocket of Nigerians, but vowed to do all to ease their pain.

He also promised to “reward” the sacrifices with “massive investment” in transportation infrastructure, education, regular power supply, healthcare, and other public utilities that will improve their quality of life.

The democracy speech of President Tinubu, gave a ray of hope that Nigerians will regain freedom once they sustain or continue on this trajectory of democracy.

Tinubu said he identified with the pain of Nigerians and argued that the temporal discomfort of the subsidy removal was necessary to save the country from going under.

According to the president “this is one decision we must bear to save our country from going under and take our resources away from the stranglehold of a few unpatriotic elements,”

Furthermore he explained the reason for taking the decision.

“I admit that the decision will impose an extra burden on the masses of our people.

“Painfully, I have asked you, my compatriots, to sacrifice a little more for the survival of our country.

Also, the President assured Nigerians of better days ahead, as he works to ease subsidy removal pains.
