The Democratic Republic of Congo has embarked on a three-day mourning period for victims of the flood in Kinshasa, its capital city.

More than 120 people were killed in the worst flood the country had witnessed in years.

Major roads were submerged as heavy rains continued for hours and several homes collapsed on people.

Many of those who died were in hillside areas that suffered landslides and buried them in.

A victim of the flood, Kenga Mwamba told BBC News Swahili that his house had collapsed, trapping his family inside.

“There was no way of getting inside my house. I was only able to rescue one child. I saw my wife’s body floating in the house. I saw my other three kids under the rubble, they were already dead. Neighbors came to help remove the bodies after the rain stopped,” he said.

The government announced a three-day period of national mourning which started on Wednesday to pay respect to those who lost their lives.
