During an election season in Nigeria, everyone takes precaution to avoid the loss of lives and properties.

Unfortunately, during such periods, the students are frequently targeted by thug attacks.

In order to ensure the safety of the nation’s human resource, the Nigerian government has issued a directive through the National Universities Commission for the closure of all tertiary institutions.

The directive comes on Monday, February 13, few days to the commencement of elections.

Also, the government says the universities and polytechnics would stay shout-down until after the forthcoming general elections.

The directive was contained in a circular issued by the Federal Ministry of Education.

In the document, the ministry directed the Executive Secretary, National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Professor Idris Bugaje, to communicate with rectors and provosts of polytechnics.

The letter, signed by Mr. I. O. Folorunsho for the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, and dated February 10, was issued in Abuja on Monday.

“In view of concerns expressed about the security of staff, students and properties of our respective institutions, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, has, following extensive consultations with the relevant security agencies, directed that all polytechnics be shut down.

“And academic activities will be suspended between Wednesday, February 22, and Tuesday, March 14, 2023,” the letter reads.

The minister had urged the NBTE boss to communicate the above to all the tertiary institutions under his regulatory jurisdiction.
