Nigeria’s athletics dominance at the 2023 African Games in Ghana culminated impressively with a Friday flourish, clinching two gold, two silver, and two bronze medals on the final day.

Chinecherem Nnamdi established a new national record in the men’s javelin event, while Esther Joseph, Patience Okon-George, Brittany Ogunmokun, and Omolara Ogunmakinju secured gold in the women’s 4x400m final.

Olayinka Olajide and Sade Olatoye claimed silver in the women’s 200m and shot put respectively, while Consider Ekanem earned bronze in the men’s 200m, marking his debut international individual medal for Nigeria.

These achievements propelled Nigeria’s athletics medal tally to 11 gold, six silver, and four bronze, totaling 21 medals.

Notably, Olajide attained a complete set of medals at the Games with her silver in the 200m, complementing her earlier bronze in the 100m and gold in the women’s 4X100m relay.

Nnamdi’s gold in the javelin event, coupled with Olatoye’s bronze in shot put, further solidified Nigeria’s commanding performance.

The men’s 4x400m relay quartet settled for bronze, Nigeria still  showcased exceptional prowess throughout the event.

Ethiopia and South Africa trailed closely in the athletics standings, but Nigeria’s formidable display secured their supremacy on the podium.
