Every morning, countless Nigerians living with diabetes face the same anxious ritual: they check whether their supply of insulin will last.

For many, the life-saving drug costs too much and remains difficult to find, so families constantly struggle against rising prices and unpredictable shortages.

Every morning, countless Nigerians living with diabetes face the same anxious ritual: they check whether their supply of insulin will last.

Local Production Breakthrough

First, Nigeria decided to confront this challenge head-on.

The Federal Government signed a landmark agreement with Shanghai Haiqi Industrial Company Limited of China to produce insulin locally.

This bold step reduces reliance on imports, lowers treatment costs, and strengthens the nation’s pharmaceutical base.

Driving Innovation At Home

Next, the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NABRDA) began driving the partnership forward as a model of medical self-reliance.

Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, explained the vision clearly: “Local insulin production saves lives and builds our future.

Then, the government tied this initiative directly to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which pushes economic diversification alongside healthcare innovation.

Director General of NABRDA, Abdullahi Mustapha, reinforced the point: “This project shows how Nigerian research delivers practical solutions for urgent national needs.

Science and innovation now work directly for our people.”

Hope For Patients

Meanwhile, General Manager, Shanghai Haiqi’s Bokai Shai, outlined the broader ambition.

“We designed this collaboration to scale insulin production in Nigeria and to strengthen the entire pharmaceutical ecosystem,” he said.

Finally, industry analysts predicted that the deal would spark new investment in local drug manufacturing and accelerate growth in Nigeria’s biotech sector.

Most importantly, patients may soon feel the difference: insulin that remains affordable, reliable, and within reach.
