Thailand’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Thirapath Mongkolnavin, presented the donation in Abuja during a ceremony with the World Food Programme (WFP).

Consequently, the WFP will distribute the rice to vulnerable residents, especially displaced families in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.

Rising Hunger Crisis

Mongkolnavin explained that Thailand offered the support because humanitarian conditions continue worsening across North-East Nigeria.

Furthermore, he recalled Thailand’s earlier $10,000 contribution through the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund managed by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA).

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Mr Olubunmi Olusanya, welcomed the donation and praised international cooperation against hunger and poverty.

Food Prices Surge

Nigeria continues facing severe food insecurity because insecurity, climate change and economic pressures keep disrupting livelihoods nationwide.

In addition, flooding, drought and violent conflicts continue disrupting farming activities and weakening food supply chains across affected communities.

According to PwC and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), about 34.7 million Nigerians could experience acute food insecurity in 2026.

Therefore, the WFP and the Federal Government will share the rice across Internally Displaced Persons camps in North-East Nigeria.
