The Accord Party has once again found itself at the centre of internal political drama as a faction of the party announced Prof. Christopher Imumolen as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The decision came after a National Presidential Primary Election held in Lagos, where delegates reportedly settled for a consensus arrangement to pick their flagbearer.
But while one side celebrates a “unified decision,” another storm is quietly brewing within the party.
“We Have Chosen Our Candidate” — Party Leadership Declares
Announcing the outcome, the National Secretary of the Accord Party, Muktar Abdullah, said Imumolen’s emergence reflects total agreement within the party structure.
He said the decision was not imposed, but collectively reached by stakeholders across different levels of the party.
According to him, the convention brought together delegates from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, all of whom participated in the selection process.

Inside the party, supporters say Imumolen represents a shift towards younger leadership and fresh political direction.
They describe him as a modern, solution-driven figure capable of addressing Nigeria’s deepening economic and governance challenges.

In his acceptance speech, Prof. Imumolen confirmed his emergence as the party’s presidential candidate, thanking delegates for what he described as overwhelming support.
He said the party would formally submit his name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Imumolen also promised a campaign built on inclusion, national unity and practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.

The Accord Party flagbearer outlined key priorities if elected president, focusing on three major national problems: unemployment, insecurity and economic instability.

Even as Imumolen celebrates his emergence, another controversy is already shaking the party.
A separate faction of the Accord Party had earlier announced Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim as its presidential candidate for the same 2027 election.
That announcement has since been rejected by the party’s national leadership, which insists no valid primary produced such a result.
One Party, Two Narratives
On one side, Imumolen is being presented as the consensus candidate of a structured convention in Lagos.
On the other, another faction is insisting a different candidate has already emerged.
