In Lagos, the approach of Eid al-Fitr usually brings crowded markets and heavy spending. Howeve, this year, traders report slower sales…

Slower Festive Demand

Across Oyingbo, Surulere, and Idi-Araba, traders record mixed sales despite the festive season.

Meanwhile, fresh harvests slightly reduce prices for some produce, but staple foods remain costly.

Key ingredients such as egusi and ogbono still sell at high prices.

As a result, these costs discourage bulk purchases.

Traders also say many customers now buy smaller portions due to inflation and transport costs.

Lagos Rising Staple Costs

At Oyingbo Market, trader Mrs Joy Adeyemi said hand-peeled egusi sells for about ₦3,000.

In contrast, machine-processed egusi costs around ₦1,500.

Similarly, Mrs Funmilola Alayan noted a decline in bulk purchases.

Ogbono prices also remain high.

Mrs Kudirat Martins said a paint bucket sells between ₦25,000 and ₦49,000.

Smaller quantities range from ₦21,000 to ₦37,000, depending on quality.

Traders link high prices to transport costs, low production, and strong demand.

Rising fuel prices also increase logistics costs.

Consequently, traders pass these costs to consumers.

Consumer Spending Shifts

In Surulere, tomatoes sell between ₦2,750 and ₦7,000 per paint bucket.

Scotch bonnet peppers range from ₦5,000 to ₦7,500.

Although prices have dropped from 2024 and 2025 peaks, sales remain slow.

At Idi-Araba, onions sell from ₦3,000 to ₦15,000, depending on quantity.

Customers remain cautious and buy only what they need.

As a result, many households prioritise essentials and limit spending.

Overall, rising costs continue to reshape festive spending in Lagos markets.
