Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has stated that the North should not field a presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2027 general election, insisting that the South must be allowed to complete what he described as its rightful eight-year tenure.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Fintiri argued that maintaining the current power rotation arrangement is crucial for national unity and political stability.
According to him, respecting the informal zoning principle between the North and South would demonstrate fairness and strengthen confidence in the country’s leadership structure.
He maintained that if Nigerians are serious about progress and equitable governance, the presidency should remain in the South until the completion of an uninterrupted eight-year cycle.
“This is not the time for any Northerner to aspire to the presidency,” he said, emphasizing that balance and continuity are necessary for the country’s development.
Fintiri, who recently moved from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, noted that political actors must prioritize national cohesion over personal ambition.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, Adamu Abubakar — son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar — has stepped down from his role as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State.
In a resignation letter dated March 2, 2026, and addressed to Governor Fintiri, Adamu said his decision followed careful reflection.

He described his period in office as an honour and expressed appreciation to the governor for the opportunity to serve.
He also thanked the people of Adamawa State for their cooperation and support during his tenure, offering prayers for continued progress and divine guidance for the state’s leadership.
