Valentino Garavani, the legendary Italian fashion designer and founder of the globally celebrated Valentino brand, has died at the age of 93.

The announcement was made on Monday, January 19, 2026, via Valentino’s official Instagram page and his foundation.

According to the statement, the designer passed away at his residence in Rome, surrounded by his loved ones.

“Our founder, Valentino Garavani, passed away today at his Roman residence, surrounded by his loved ones,” the statement read.

Burial Arrangements

A lying in state will be held at PM23, Piazza Mignanelli 23, on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 and Thursday, January 22, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The funeral service is scheduled for Friday, January 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri in Rome.

Tributes quickly poured in from fashion industry legends and admirers, many of whom shared heartfelt messages in the comments section of the announcement.

Renowned for his signature “Valentino red” gowns, Garavani’s career reached international prominence in the 1960s after former U.S.

First Lady Jackie Kennedy purchased and wore six of his designs following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Kennedy later chose a Valentino gown for her wedding to shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, further cementing his status as a designer to the world’s elite.

Reflecting on his enduring success in the 2008 documentary Valentino:

The Last Emperor, Garavani famously said, “I know what women want. They want to be beautiful.”

Beyond the runway, Valentino became a pop culture icon, making a memorable appearance as himself in the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada.

Valentino: The Last Emperor also chronicled his life and final years in fashion.

Which featured appearances by Gwyneth Paltrow, Anne Hathaway, Elizabeth Hurley, Sarah Jessica Parker, and his beloved six pugs.
