Electric boats are set to transform daily commuting for Lagos residents, who struggle with heavy traffic jams.
Recently, LAGFERRY Managing Director, Hon. Abdoulbaq Ladi-Balogun, announced that the government will introduce them within the year.

Moreover, these vessels cost less to operate and maintain, allowing LAGFERRY to lower passenger fares.
In addition, they support Lagos’s goal of sustainable and green public transport.
Meanwhile, more commuters are leaving their cars behind, enjoying smoother journeys across the lagoon.
Since February 2020, 4.4 million passengers have adopted the “Watermania Lifestyle,” gliding safely and comfortably over Lagos waters.
During the 2025 Detty December, trips surged tenfold as residents visited beaches, coastal resorts, and weekend getaways.
Omi Eko Project Drives Innovation
Furthermore, the government is rolling out the €410 million Omi Eko Project, which modernises Lagos waterways.

LASWA leads the initiative, while the EU and private partners provide grants and loans to support the project.
It includes 75 electric vessels, 25 terminals, dredged channels, charging stations, intelligent ticketing, and vessel tracking systems.
Also, LASWA trains its staff to manage and operate the new vessels efficiently.
Once complete, the project will carry 25 million passengers annually and reduce congestion on busy roads.

Consequently, commuters will enjoy faster, quieter, cleaner journeys with lower costs and less pollution.
