The Ikorodu Ferry Terminal will reopen on Monday, January 19, 2026, after months of disruption caused by water hyacinth.
LASWA confirmed the reopening in a statement on Friday, explaining that its team completed all safety assessments.

Ikorodu Terminal Reopens
The terminal had closed on October 20, 2025, disrupting thousands of commuters who rely on ferry services daily.
During the closure, operators diverted passenger services to Ibeshe Terminal and Offin Jetty to maintain limited routes.
Water Hyacinth Challenges
Moreover, dense mats of water hyacinth blocked navigation and risked damaging boat engines and propellers.
Smaller vessels struggled to force their way through the vegetation, which caused jolting rides for passengers.
In some cases, the thick hyacinth mats trapped boats and even caused them to capsize.
Additionally, operators faced high repair costs, sometimes around ₦150,000 for a single piston replacement.
LASWA also consulted with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) before resuming operations.

Now, all operators must follow approved schedules and ensure full compliance with safety regulations.
Turning Problem Into Opportunity
Consequently, the reopening restores a key commuting route for residents travelling between Ikorodu and other Lagos areas.
Furthermore, LASWA partnered with MitiMeth to transform the removed water hyacinth into handcrafted home products.
This initiative turns a persistent nuisance into useful items, benefiting local communities and the environment.
With the waterways now clear, passengers can enjoy smoother, safer journeys and the return of regular ferry services.
