Ace Nigerian music producer and record label executive, Michael Collins Ajereh, popularly known as Don Jazzy, has described Afrobeats as a “baby genre” when compared to other established global music styles, despite its growing international recognition.

The Mavin Records boss noted that practitioners within the Afrobeats space are still learning, emphasising that the global music industry remains dynamic and constantly evolving.
He also highlighted the significant rise in the cost of promoting Nigerian music over the years, pointing out how production budgets have dramatically increased.
In a lengthy post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Don Jazzy explained that Afrobeats is still in its developmental stage on the global scene.
He recalled how, a few years ago, the idea of spending over ₦20 million on a music video seemed excessive, but has since become commonplace, with some videos now costing over $100,000 to produce.
The veteran producer further stated that he remains open to learning from individuals who have excelled in areas he has yet to explore, both within and outside the music industry.
He referenced global superstar Burna Boy as an example, noting that he would gladly learn from him about staging multiple international stadium shows.
He also cited business mogul Aliko Dangote, saying he would be willing to learn from his experience in building a refinery in Lagos.
Don Jazzy concluded by encouraging aspiring music executives to take notes from his experience, stressing that there are only a few individuals who have successfully run record labels in Nigeria.
