Nigerian entertainer Samklef ignited a heated political debate on Tuesday after stating that, in his view, President Bola Tinubu who assumed office in May 2023 has performed better in leadership than former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who ruled from 1999 to 2007.

His comment drew swift reactions, with critics demanding verifiable evidence to support the comparison.
They noted that Obasanjo’s administration recorded an average of 7% GDP growth, secured $30 billion in debt relief, and oversaw a telecom revolution that expanded Nigeria’s nominal GDP from $59 billion to $278 billion.
Tinubu’s supporters, however, point to his reform-driven agenda, including fuel subsidy removal and currency adjustments, which align with Nigeria’s recent 3–4% GDP growth trajectory.
Still, skeptics argue that these reforms have come with significant hardship, particularly inflation that surged above 25% in his early months.
