The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched the Biometric Emergency Passport to help Nigerians stranded abroad.
The Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP) will assist citizens whose passports have expired, been lost, or stolen, so they can return home safely.

Biometric Passport Introduced For Stranded Citizens
Comptroller-General Kemi Nandap unveiled the initiative during a joint migration forum in Abuja, co-hosted by Nigeria and France.
STEP will replace the existing Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC) and will allow a single entry into Nigeria.
Secure Travel Through Embassies
The Service will issue the passport only at designated Nigerian embassies and consulates abroad, ensuring citizens travel securely and verifiably.
Nandap explained that the launch reflects broader NIS reforms, which aim to strengthen identity management and border governance according to global standards.

She also emphasised that the initiative demonstrates the Service’s commitment to efficient service delivery, robust identity protection, and adoption of international best practices in migration management.
Regional Cooperation And Reform
During the forum, key stakeholders including ECOWAS, the African Union, the European Union, NAPTIP, and refugee agencies discussed regional challenges.
They explored strategies to combat human trafficking and migrant smuggling, focusing on prevention, protection, and prosecution.
Nandap highlighted Nigeria’s reform agenda, noting improvements in migration systems, international cooperation, and capacity building to ensure safe, orderly mobility.
With the STEP, stranded Nigerians now have a reliable, secure, and timely option to return home.
