Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a directive banning the use of ‘union stickers’ as a substitute for legitimate vehicle registration numbers by transport unions and associations.
According to LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the practice is not only unlawful but also a “serious security risk and a gross subversion of proper vehicular identification systems within Lagos.”

He warned that any vehicle found operating with such unauthorised identifiers would be impounded.
The offenders are facing sanctions under existing laws.
The statement was signed by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq.
He emphasised that all vehicles on Lagos roads must be duly registered with authorised government agencies.
It further stated that unauthorised stickers compromise public safety, obstruct law enforcement, and undermine proper identification processes.
To enforce compliance, LASTMA said it will intensify surveillance across major routes in collaboration with security agencies.
Bakare-Oki urged transport unions to comply with registration laws.
He stresses that proper documentation protects both motorists and the public.
“The Lagos State Government will not condone any attempt to bypass established procedures. Enforcement will be strict to safeguard lives, property, and the integrity of traffic management,” he said.
This comes after a similar warning in February 2024, when LASTMA cautioned skit makers and filmmakers against unauthorised use of its uniforms
