Turkey Earthquake: UN Seeks $1bn Aid For Affected AreasTurkey and Syria earthquake claimed over 40,000 lives and the United Nations (UN) do not want more people to die as a result of hunger and other issues.

It is making a $1 billion appeal for to assist more than five million people affected by earthquakes.

These earthquakes are the largest to hit the country in a century.

Southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria on February 6 were struck by cataclysmic earthquakes.

The funding, which will cover three months, will allow aid organisations to support government-led response efforts in certain areas.

The areas include food security, protection, education, water and shelter.

UN Calls For International Support

UN Secretary General, António Guterres, has urged the international community to step up and fully fund the response effort.

“Turkey is home to the largest number of refugees in the world and has shown enormous generosity to its Syrian neighbours for years.

“Now is the time for the world to support the people of Turkey – just as they have stood in solidarity with others seeking assistance,” he said.

The UN’s Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, also sought support for the appeal.

“The people of Türkiye have experienced unspeakable heartache,’’ Mr Griffiths said.

“I met families who shared their stories of shock and devastation.

“We must stand with them in their darkest hour and ensure they receive the support they need.”

The UN and other partners have been supporting Turkey and Syria following the earthquakes that hit the neighbouring countries.
