Tinubu Meets With Northern Governors Sharing Borders With Niger

On Sunday, August 6,2023 President Bola Tinubu hosted the governors of the States that border the Niger Republic.

According to reports, the meeting at the State House in Abuja was a part of the President’s deliberations on the situation in Niger.

Northern Governors

Ahmed Aliyu (Sokoto), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Mai Malam Buni (Yobe), Idris Nasir (Kebbi), and Dr. Dikko Radda (Katsina) were the governors present.

Meanwhile, the Northern Elites have spoken out against the proposed assault on the Nigerian military junta, stressing the likely impact such action would have on Nigeria.

A seven-day deadline was given by Tinubu, who also serves as the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), to the military junta in the Niger Republic to restore democracy by handing Mohammed Bazoum back the reins of power.

This resulted in a series of sanctions, some of which led to the closing of the borders with Niger and the permanent suspension of aviation operations.

Earlier, President Tinubu requested permission in writing from the National Assembly’s top officials to send military soldiers to the unstable Niger.

However, the Senate turned down the request while it asked Tinubu and other leaders of the region to tread with caution in addressing the political situation.
