SEC To Prioritise Cybersecurity And AI In Overhauled Curriculum

The Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC, is set to modernise Nigeria’s university curriculum by integrating cybersecurity, AI, and advanced cryptocurrency.

SEC Director General, Dr. Emomotimi Agama, announced this at the launch of a committee led by Professor Uche Uwaleke, aiming to equip students with essential skills for the evolving market.

On a pivotal day for Nigeria’s financial sector, the Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Dr. Emomotimi Agama, announced an ambitious initiative to update the curriculum for Nigerian universities with new subjects like Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence, and advanced cryptocurrency studies.

Indeed, with rapid advancements in technology reshaping global finance, the SEC’s goal is to equip the next generation with essential, market-relevant skills.

During the event, Agama introduced a committee of experts, led by Professor Uche Uwaleke from Nasarawa State University, to revise the existing Securities and Investment Management curriculum.

Consequently, this team would ensure the curriculum aligns with the latest trends in the financial world, thereby preparing students to excel in an increasingly digital economy.

“Our curriculum, therefore, needs to keep up with fintech, cybersecurity, and AI developments,” Agama emphasised.

“Young people deserve knowledge that is relevant to today’s capital market.”

Moreover, the committee’s scope includes incorporating topics like Non-Interest Capital Market principles, financial derivatives, sustainable finance, and updating cryptocurrency studies to reflect recent advancements.

By developing a standardised Capital Market Studies curriculum, they aim to enhance capital market literacy and close the knowledge gap within Nigeria.

In response, Professor Uwaleke expressed gratitude for the trust placed in the committee, pledging to make a positive impact on the nation’s educational landscape and, ultimately, prepare students for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
