According to figures from the UN at least 12,000 migrants who landed on Italy’s shores this year arrived from Tunisia.

Recently, a string of migrant boats has been reported to capsize after leaving the Tunisian shores.
This was after the Tunisian government launched a campaign against undocumented African migrants.

However, about 29 migrants have reportedly lost their lives after at least two boats sank off Tunisia’s coast.
This happened within hours of each other, officials say.
Five boats reportedly sunk in the past four days.
Preventing Migrant Crossings
Reacting to the incident, Italian officials on the island of Lampedusa say they are overwhelmed.
The Italian officials record the arrival of 2,500 migrants in the last 24 hours.
The Italian far-right Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has warned that Europe risks seeing a huge wave of refugees arriving on its shores.
