It appears that Imo State is dragging itself to the cleaners, with the discord between it and the organised labour unions; Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). Now an NLC nationwide strike is looming.

The situation is getting tense, as the unions on Tuesday, declared a total nationwide strike.

The strike declaration gives the government just one week to resolve the issue. Strike will begin on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, the unions said.

The leadership of the two unions resolved after an extraordinary National Executive Council meeting on Tuesday in Abuja that the strike must hold.

The NLC and TUC after the announcement of the nationwide strike began mobilisation of members and allies across Nigeria.

The union is accusing the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Mohammed Barde of complicity in the recent attack on Ajaero, in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.

The Organised Labour on Friday handed the Federal Government a five-day ultimatum to replace the police commissioner.

They also blamed the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, for the attack on Ajaero.

Consequences

However, the governor has since said he had no hand in the attack on the labour leader.

The organised labour also demanded the arrest and prosecution of some of the governor’s aides and threatened to embark on a nationwide industrial action if their demands were not carried met.

Furthermore, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Sunday, redeployed Barde.

He said the decision was for “neutrality’s sake” ahead of the November 11, 2023 governorship election in Imo State.
