Japan, US meet over Iran, reach agreement

The Defense Ministers of Japan, Taro Kono and the U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper met at the Pentagon on Tuesday and discussed the situations in Iran and North Korea.

They also reaffirmed that the two countries will continue to work closely to strengthen the bilateral alliance ahead of the 60th anniversary of the 1960 revision to the Japan-U.S. security treaty.

Speaking at a joint press conference after their meeting, the US defense chief thanked his Japanese counterpart for “Japan’s decision to deploy its Self-Defense Force assets to the Gulf of Aden, the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.”

He was referring to the planned dispatch of a Japanese SDF unit to the Middle East aimed at ensuring sea lane safety in the region, according to JiJi Press, cited by Newsnow.

On his part, Kono pledged that Tokyo will “make persistent diplomatic efforts to ease the tension and stabilize the situation” in the Middle East.

The US defense chief added that the Japan-U.S. alliance “experienced a remarkable evolution over the past 60 years” and the bilateral relationship will “continue to be critical to our collective security and regional stability.”

The assassination of powerful Iranian army chief, Qassem Soleimani by the US government has escalated tensions in the Middle East.

Last Sunday, four Iraqi soldiers were wounded after eight Katyusha rockets were fired at the Al Balad airbase being the second time in less than a week.

Also on Tuesday Katyusha rockets were reportedly targeted at the Taji military camp, located north of Baghdad, housing US troops but no casualties were reported.

President Muhammadu Buhari has commended the Supreme Court for the ‘courage and perseverance’ to return Sen. Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the March 9, 2019 governorship election in Imo.

The president made the commendation while reacting to Tuesday’s Supreme Court judgment that sacked Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as Governor of Imo State and declared Uzodinma winner.

President Buhari said: “The road to justice may be long and tortuous, but it is the best path for anyone aggrieved.

“Under the new administration, a new journey to build a new Imo with new energy is about to begin. In this outcome, it is the people of Imo State who have emerged victorious.”

In congratulating the new governor, the president urged Uzodinma to promote the ideals of the APC and unite the state by running an inclusive administration.

The Supreme Court in a unanimous judgment on Tuesday sacked Ihedioha as Governor of Imo State and declared Hope Uzodinma winner.

A seven-man panel of the apex court in its decision held that Ihedioha did not win the majority of votes cast at the March 9, 2019 governorship election.

In the Judgment delivered by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the court accordingly ordered the INEC to withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Ihedioha and issue a fresh Certificate of Return to the candidate of the APC on grounds that he won the majority of the lawful votes cast at the election.

The court also ordered the immediate swearing-in of Uzodinma as the lawful winner of the March 9, 2019 governorship election in Imo State.

Imo: ‘Guess work’ – Daddy Freeze mocks Fr. Mbaka, Nigerians

Controversial media personality, Daddy Freeze has mocked Catholic priest, Fr Ejike Mbaka over his prophecy that the All Progressive Congress, APC, governorship candidate, Hope Uzodinma will replace Emeka Ihedioha in 2020.

Father Mbaka’s prophecy was confirmed on Tuesday as the Supreme Court removed Gov Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and declared Hope Uzodinma as the Governor of Imo State.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun said 236,000 votes due to Uzodinma and APC from 318 polling units were wrongly excluded and should be added.

Imo Guber: Apologize to Fr. Mbaka now – APC chieftain tells attackers

Two-time Commissioner in Imo state and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Vitalis Ajumbe, Wednesday, criticized attackers of Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, the director of Adoration Ministry, Enugu, over his 2020 new year prophecy.

Advertisements

DAILY POST reported that Mbaka had prophesied that the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Imo State, during the last election will emerge governor of the state.

Mbaka predicted that Senator Hope Uzodinma, will take over from Emeka Ihedioha as Imo Governor in 2020.

However, the Supreme Court had on Tuesday sacked Gov Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and declared Uzodinma as the Governor of Imo State.

It, therefore, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to withdraw the certificate of return from former Governor Emeka Ihedioha and issue same to Uzodinma.

Reacting, Ajumbe, who served as Commissioner of Information during ex-governor Rochas Okorocha-led government, in a telephone interview with DAILY POST, asked antagonists of Mbaka’s prophetic declaration on Imo gubernatorial seat to apologize to the revered Catholic priest over lashes meted to him.

He said the unanimous affirmation of Senator Hope Uzodinma as the duly elected Governor of the state by the Supreme Court had brought back APC where it originally belonged.

The APC chieftain said, “I congratulate Senator Hope Uzodinma and all APC members for the victory. Imo State has come back to APC where it originally belonged. People who called Rev. Mbaka names as a false prophet should now apologise to him publicly. Mbaka prophesied it and it has come to past.

“The highest court in Nigeria has said it and there is no going back. Congratulations to Senator Hope Uzodinma and His Deputy, Prof. Placid Njoku. Emeka Ihedioha tried his best. He fought like a lion. He outsmarted his opponents in the last governorship election”.

“He should take it as a sportsman. Age is still on his side. He may one day be the Governor of Imo state,” Ajumbe added.

Street fight as Okada rider, passenger attack FRSC officials

A motorcycle operator, known as Okada rider and his passenger went berserk yesterday as they beat officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Advertisements

The duo were also accused of breaking the windshield of the FRSC patrol vehicle.

The FRSC spokesperson in Ogun, Florence Okpe, confirmed the incident to DAILY POST on Wednesday.

Advertisements

Okpe said the incident occurred at about 10:30 am on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

She said a senior officer of the Corps on routine monitoring of the corridor had noticed a vehicle driving against traffic.

Advertisements

According to her, immediately the driver driving against traffic sighted the FRSC vehicle, he was gripped with fear as he swerved and faced the vehicle oncoming behind the FRSC patrol vehicle.

This, she said, made the driver of the FRSC vehicle to pull over so as to prevent the situation from escalating.

“In the process, a speeding motorcycle riding with a pillion (passenger) momentarily lost control of the speeding motorbike, but immediately he stabilised, he stopped and parked the bike and went straight to attack the FRSC team.

“While the motorcycle rider went for the windshield of the FRSC vehicle with registration number, C0180RS, which he slammed heavily with his fist and wilfully got the windshield broken, the pilion on his own went for one of the Marshals and attacked him vigorously.

“Not satisfied they both went to attack other members of the FRSC team,” Okpe explained.

However, she disclosed that the two “violent” motorcyclists were overpowered and handed over to the DPO, Warewa Police Station.

Wheelbarrow Empowerment: I will distribute shovels, head pan – Enugu LG boss carpets critics

The last is yet to be head on the controversy over the distribution of wheelbarrow to some youths in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State as a means of empowerment.

Advertisements

DAILY POST had reported that the Transition Committee Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Hon. Mrs. Chinwe Ugwu distributed 30 wheelbarrows to the youths during an empowerment programme.

The development attracted harsh comments from residents of Enugu and beyond, with many calling it a ‘show of shame.’

Advertisements

But defending her actions, Ugwu was quoted as saying, “I decided to empower barrow pushers of Nsukka local government council, irrespective of ethnicity and religion.

“I gave out 30 unbranded wheel barrows this month; in a few weeks, another 30 will smile home with brand new barrows, while by February, it will be the turn of masons, who hire head pans, shovels and concrete mixer to eke out means of livelihood.

Advertisements

“These people equally cast votes and have to reap the fruits of their vote. I came to pave the way for he who is to come. I’m on a mission but I have to make a mark that Chinwe was once the council transition committee chairman of Nsukka local government council.”

“I don’t feel bad at all. I don’t see anything bad in what I have done. I have no apology for anybody. People who don’t understand what I have done can go ahead and say whatever they like. I even want to make it up to a hundred.

“These were poor people who could not afford to buy barrow but had to hire them for between N200 to N300.00 a day.

“Some youths came to me and pleaded on their behalf and I told them to go and write down the names of those barrow pushers that cannot afford to buy one.

“You need to see how happy they were that they now have their own barrow which was given to them free of charge. They were asked to write whatever they liked on the barrow because it now belonged to them.

“They were so happy that some of them came and touched me asking me, ‘Mayor, can we touch you?’ You needed to have seen them. It was as if they were seeing and touching Jesus. They were so happy and I have no apology. I’ll even do more. I heard that some labourers hire shovels and head pans for mason and concrete work. I’ll also buy head pans and shovels for them so that they can fend for their families.

“All my life, my heart has been going for the poorest of the poor and you know that you have the poorest of the poor all over the world. Will you phase out barrow pushing because of Chinwe Ugwu,?” she queried.

Iran: Trump, Britain reach agreement

U.S. President Donald Trump, has said that he agrees with a comment by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson that a “Trump deal” should replace the Iran nuclear deal.

Advertisements

Johnson had on Tuesday called on Trump to replace the Iranian nuclear deal with his (Trump) own new agreement.

Iran’s nuclear programmes have generated a lot of crisis in the Middle East.

Following the assassination of powerful Army General, Qassem Soleimani,  Iran has vowed to continue with its nuclear weapons.

On the other hand, President Donald Trump had also vowed that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon under his watch.

Johnson had said, “If we’re going to get rid of it, let’s replace it and let’s replace it with the Trump deal.

“That would be a great way forward.

“I don’t want a military conflict between us, the United States and Iran, let’s dial this thing down,” Johnson said.

In response to this, Trump tweeted on Tuesday, “Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, @BorisJohnson, stated, ‘We should replace the Iran deal with the Trump deal. I agree!”

Rivers monarchs: Gov. Wike blasts Peterside for criticising his comment

[ad_1]

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has attacked a former governorship aspirant in the State, Dr. Dakuku Peterside for condemning his (Wike) recent comments on traditional rulers in the State.

Advertisements

Wike, in a statement signed by Paulinus Nsirim, the State’s Commissioner for Information, said Peterside was only seeking political relevance.

Governor Wike had while addressing traditional rulers in the state during their quarterly meeting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, pounced on some of the monarchs in a ‘disgraceful’ manner.

Advertisements

In reaction, Peterside had condemned the Governor’s action, describing it as “demeaning, unbecoming, irresponsible, despicable, unacceptable and unbefitting” for a governor.

But Wike’s statement said, “As usual, we were amused by the lame effort by the 2015 Defunct Rivers State APC Governorship Candidate, Mr Dakuku Peterside to seek political relevance through a jaundiced interpretation of a mischievously edited video of the interaction between Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike and esteemed Traditional Rulers of Rivers State.

Advertisements

“Dakuku Peterside and his faction of the defunct All Progressives Congress ( APC) procured a video of an engagement that lasted for over one hour and lifted different aspects of the response of Governor Wike to mislead members of the public.

“Governor Wike was responding frankly to the address of the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of the Rulers wherein the Chairman requested that non-recognised Traditional Rulers should be checked by the Rivers State Governor.

“The Governor directed the Attorney General of Rivers State to prepare an Executive Bill to resolve the issue raised by Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers. He went ahead to urge the Traditional Rulers to always attend Government functions with the Official Staff of Office handed over to them by the Rivers State Government, following the formal request by the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers.

“At this point, there was a general applause and Governor Wike reminded those clapping that he was simply doing what is right.

“For Dakuku Peterside to attempt to use a frank discussion between the Rivers State Governor and the esteemed Traditional Rulers of Rivers State to seek relevance is a confirmation of the total rejection that he suffers alongside members of his defunct political party.

“As a political toddler, who is being breastfed politically, Dakuku Peterside still relies on mischief to remain relevant. He goes about paying social media cheerleaders to cast aspersion on the Rivers State Governor on the premise of a manipulated video.

Advertisements

“We understand Dakuku Peterside’s frustration following the painful defeat he suffered in 2015. But he cannot climb the political ladder on the premise of needless falsehood and mischief.

“Rather than this dance of shame he should redirect his energy on how to rebuild the disintegrated APC family in the State.

“Dakuku Peterside can be likened to a man chasing rats while his house is on fire. There are so many factions in Rivers State. Instead of Dakuku Peterside to address this shameful issue, he is sniffing around paying for videos of the official engagements of Governor Wike.

“Thank God they have accepted that Governor Wike is the best performing Governor in the country and are now concentrating their wasted energy on backyard gossip. “

Enugu LG Polls: Awgu Community sends message to Gov. Ugwuanyi

Obeagu community, in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, on Tuesday, stood still as residents trooped out in their numbers during a solidarity rally organized in honour of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of the State.

Advertisements

Beaming with joy and excitement, the residents said the essence of the rally was to appreciate the Governor for his achievements in office and to further declare total support for him in his second tenure.

They said notable is the way the State Government, under Ugwuanyi tackled the security challenges witnessed in Awgu sometime last year, during which several residents of the local government area were kidnapped.

Advertisements

The community said following the government’s strategies, which included the establishment of forest guards and strengthening of the neighbourhood watch groups, normalcy had since returned to the area.

They, however, pleaded with Governor Ugwuanyi to remember them in the area of political positions, lamenting that for the past 36 years, none of their indigenes have held any political position either at the local government or state level.

Advertisements

Speaking at the rally, the President-General of Obeagu Town Union, Chief Abba Anthony said they gathered together to tell the Governor that their support for him remained unshakeable.

“His name is Gburugburu, and what that means in our place is somebody who is looking at even small children who are crawling, you go round and and make sure that your life affects them positively, and that is exactly the kind of Governor we have, that is how he behaves.

“So, we have gathered here today to remind him that we are still in Obeagu, that the people of Obeagu are crying telling him that we supported him during the elections, despite challenges, because we had a unique situation, that is why APC picked a Deputy Governor from our place, but our people stood resolute, made sure all our votes went to the PDP and now we are supporting him in this second tenure.

“He has done so much for us. We cried to him when our people were reading under the tree in Ijime, he responded swiftly, came to our rescue. That place now, the pupils are inside their classes studying, very happy. When I passed there, they were hailing the Governor.

“That is why we have gathered here to thank him and to plead like Oliver Twist, that he remember us in all he is doing. Though Nazareth is too small, it produced Jesus. I think if anything comes out from Obeagu, he will not regret it. Today, we are begging him to look at us,” the PG said.

Re-echoing his stand, the Auditor of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Tochukwu Chukwu said “we are here to further declare our support for His Excellecny, the Executive Governor of Enugu State. We want to support him for good governance, we want to support him for security.

Advertisements

“You know that a few months ago, we had security issues in Awgu, but the way he tackled it, especially with the Forest Guards, normalcy was completely restored and we have been a happy people, so want to appreciate him. He has also entrenched peace in Enugu State, that’s why we have organized this solidarity march.

“He should carry on with what he is doing, because his disposition has made Enugu the most peaceful State. We are behind him and will continue to support him.

“He is a Governor that loves his people, and that is also why we are pleading with him to look into our situation. We know that he has a listening ear. We are pleading with him to look at Obeagu. In the area of elected positions, we are nowhere to be found.

“We are using this occasion to appeal to him to consider our situation, more especially the chairmanship contest in this local government election, we have waited for so long and we know that he is the only one that can wipe our tears.”

Also speaking, other community leaders, Chief Nnanyelugo Dennis, Prince A.C. Mbah, Obumneme Brown, among others, said the Governor’s achievements had been phenomenal.

“We are thanking the Governor and asking him to remember us in this 2020 local government election. Our men are not in government; we are forgotten,” said Nnanyelugo.

According to Obumneme “today is a great day in Obeagu, he is the first governor that stepped his feat in Obeagu; he is a great man, that is why everybody gathered here, many people returned from across the country, you can see even little children. We are all here to re-echo our support for his government.

On his part, Mbah said, “today’s event was out together by the people of Obeagu community to drum support for a man God brought to us in a time like this.

“I say this because Obeagu has been in political darkness for the past 37 years; we have not had any government appointment for the past 37 years, but gave us a governor that listens to everybody, so we have this opportunity to tell him we love you, we support your government, so remember us also. If not for a governor like him, we are sure we will wait for another 37 years.”
