Herdsmen abandon cows as residents chase them from Ondo community

Fulani herdsmen on Wednesday scampered for safety when residents of Ijare community in Iferdore Local Government Area of Ondo State chased them out of town following complaints that the herders had been using their cows to destroy farm produce in the town.

The herdsmen who left their cows behind were pursued by youths led by the community’s chiefs.

According to sources in Ijare town, the incident occurred after warnings have been given to herdsmen by the community.

It was gathered that the herdsmen refused to leave but went far into the innermost part of the town to rare their cows, a development that the community leaders were not comfortable with.

On Wednesday morning, the youths of the community traced the herdsmen and having seen the youths, the herdsmen took to their heels, leaving their cows behind.

The cows which were later arrested were taken to the palace of the town’s monarch.

The source said, “They have been adamant and it was high time they left. We didn’t harm them but we were surprised the way they ran away like being chased by a lion.

They have been destroying our farms and we could no longer condone such losses again.

We don’t have problem with them but we don’t want them and their cows in Ijare anymore.

Recall that Ijare community was where lightning killed 36 cows in 2019. https://dailypost.ng/2019/09/22/breaking-thunder-strikes-dead-36-cows-ondo-communitys-sacred-groove/ to

Imo: INEC breaks silence on Supreme Court ruling on Ihedioha

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has not received the certified true copy of the Tuesday Supreme Court Judgment on Imo governorship election.

Advertisements

The apex court had on Tuesday removed Gov Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and declared the All Progressive Congress, APC’s Hope Uzodinma as the Governor of Imo State.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun said 236,000 votes due to Uzodinma and APC from 318 polling units were wrongly excluded and should be added.

Reacting, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Voter Education Committee, Mr Festus Okoye, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja, said that INEC would comply with the judgment once it was served with the enrolled copy of the judgment.

Okoye said that the commission had no problem with issuing Certificate of Return in compliance with a court order, but it needed a copy of the enrolled court judgment to know clearly what it was ordered to do.

He said the commission had a responsibility to obey the judgment of the Supreme Court as the final court of the land.

“We have no problem with issuing certificate of return, but we cannot issue the certificate until when we see very clearly a certified copy of the judgment of Supreme Court or an enrolled order of the judgment of the court directing us clearly and unequivocally on what to do.

“The moment we see it, issuing certificate is a mini venture, we will definitely comply. We have the constitutional responsibility to obey the judgment of the Supreme Court.

“The commission has not been served with a copy of the enrolled judgment so that the commission will know clearly and unequivocally what the Supreme court directed us to do.

“The moment we are served with the court order we will issue the certificate immediately,” Okoye said.

Amotekun: Gani Adams condemn Buhari’s govt over declaring security outfit illegal, [Full letter]

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Abiodun Ige Adams,on Wednesday condemned the declaration by President Muhammadu Buhari’s government that Amotekun, the new Southwest security outfit is illegal.

The Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, made the announcement on Tuesday.

A statement signed by Malami’s spokesman, Umar Gwandu, said, “The setting up of the paramilitary organisation called Amotekun is illegal and runs contrary to the provisions of the Nigerian law.

In his reaction, Adams said stated that the right to life cannot be in the exclusive list of any serious government.

Adams, in a letter to Malami, added that he has advised Southwest governors to shun government’s position on Amotekun.

See full text of letter below:

Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN)
Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Justice Minister,
Abuja.

Dear Sir

PROTEST OVER YOUR ILLEGAL ORDER TO SOUTH-WEST GOVERNORS

I find it disturbing your statement of Tuesday January14, 2020 declaring the security initiative of South-West governors ‘Amotekun’ as illegal. You also threatened that the full course of the law will be applied to anybody promoting the Amotekun security initiative.

May be you have forgotten. I need to remind you that you are the Attorney-General of the country, not a section of the country. So, your outburst against the governors who were elected, not selected or appointed, is against the spirit of the 1999 Constituted (as amended).

Advertisements

The right to life is universal and no government can legislate against that. I don’t need to bother you about killings, kidnappings, banditry and other criminal vices in the South-West recently.

Even Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, the daughter of Yoruba leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, was killed and nobody has been arrested in respect of all these killings.

One thing is clear: Nigerians have the right to protect themselves. Not only that: South-West people have a right to protect and defend themselves against attacks. Amotekun is an initiative by the South-West governors to defend our people.

Where you are getting it wrong is this: The Amotekun initiative has nothing to do with the territorial integrity of Nigeria. If there is a breach of the territorial integrity of the country, the military will come in immediately.

So, nobody is rising against Nigeria, as your letter to the governors, directly or indirectly, implied. What is happening is that our people no longer feel safe because the land has been invaded by some elements from within and outside the country.

It is unfortunate that rather than praise the governors, you are condemning their action, thereby strengthening the hands of those who believe the Federal Government is against some sections of the country.

As a lawyer and a Senior Advocate, you should know that you are not the law. You are only the Attorney-General, not a court. It is only a court of competent jurisdiction that will decide if what an individual, group of individuals, an entity or a state does is legal or otherwise.

So, it is only a court that can invalidate the South-West joint security initiative, not you. I want to establish this fact that the Yoruba have a right to protect themselves from attack or violence of any sort.”

Issues of security is highly sensitive, and we can now understand where the threat is coming from. It is unfortunate that the FG is doing everything to frustrate the southwest governors’ efforts.

For instance, last Wednesday, that was less than 24-hours before the launching of Amotekun in Ibadan, the Presidency summoned the southwest governors to Aso rock.

We knew about the intrigues that played out at the meeting. We knew about the frustrations at Aso rock, but the governors, having realised the implications of playing politics with the lives of their people, stood their ground and went ahead to launch the security outfit as planned”

So, it is your position on this volatile situation that is illegal, unlawful, immoral and of no effect because your declaration has proved some critics right that some states in the country are deliberately left vulnerable to attacks by criminals.

I have called on Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Gboyega Oyetola (Osun), Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo) and Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti) to ignore your position on this matter.

Why do people employ guards in their houses? For security. Why do Community Development Associations (CDAs) employ guards to secure streets and areas? To ensure protection of lives and property.

Is that initiative in the exclusive list of the constitution? No. I repeat that the right to preserve and protect your life can never be in the exclusive list of any government.

I am aware of similar security outfits in other sections of the country. Why you are against the protection of the lives and properties of Yoruba people defies logic.

This week is the 50th anniversary of the end of the civil war. We should do everything to avoid plunging the country into another war.
Mr. Malami, please don’t set a bad precedence.

Killing of Christians: HURIWA takes case to Pope, Trump

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, said it has resolved to petition the head of the Catholic Church in the Vatican and the President of the United States of America on the spate of what it called well-coordinated armed invasions of churches and Christian dormitories by suspected armed Islamists and bandits that have made Kaduna state the epicenter of these extensively coordinated attacks against Christians.

Advertisements

HURIWA has urged the two global leaders to compel President Muhammadu Buhari and governor Malam Nassir El’ Rufai of Kaduna state, to stop the siege and systematic genocidal killings of Christians in the Christian dominated heartland of Southern Kaduna.

The letter follows a recent attack on seminarians’ living quarters in the state and alleged silence by security forces in investigating and retrieving stolen items.

The groups National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, and the National Media Affairs Director, Miss Zainab Yusuf, said it has decided to call the attention of Pope Francis and President Donald Trump on the spate of well-coordinated armed invasions of Churches and Christian dominated areas of Southern Kaduna their genocide theater that resulted in the loss of unimaginable number of innocent souls and property.

The rights group said it has told the world leaders that both the Presidency and the Kaduna state political authorities are treating with levity the grave threats of extinctions and genocide that Christians are subjected to in Kaduna state.

Advertisements

The group explained that the gross disrespect for Federal Character principle in the state which culminated in the emergence of an all Moslem Governor, deputy Governor and State House of Assembly Speaker and deputy thereby consigning millions of Christians to the inglorious position of second class citizens is the canon fodder for the spiraling armed attacks by armed Islamists masquerading as herdsmen, kidnappers and bandits who have in the past one year or more specifically targeted Christian communities and schools in the state.

HURIWA explained, “On the last count virtually all major Christian denominations in Kaduna state have witnessed dozens of attacks just as dozens of Pastors have died in the cause of these targeted armed invasions and kidnapping. We are not accusing the Kaduna state government of involvement but we are worried about the conspiratorial silence to these series of attacks.

“We have consistently asked the politicians of Kaduna state to respect section 14(3) of the constitution which obliges the appointments of all ethno-religious community members into strategic offices but in 2019 election, the governor made sure only Moslems are railroaded into the offices of governor, deputy and even the office of Speaker of the State House of Assembly is occupied by a Moslem.

“This is the fuel that has ignited widespread mistreatment of Christians. The incessant attacks by armed Islamists targeting only Pastors, Christian schools and clerics of Christian denomination have become a national emergency.

“Since Nigerian state and the Kaduna state government are not treating these threats as a national emergency, we have decided to let the world know the true state of things and we are happy that some organisations have made similar findings.

“Sadly, the Kaduna state government and the office of the Nigerian President are deeply entrenched in the selective appointments of mostly Moslems as holders of virtually all strategic positions thus neglecting the other key constituents who are Christians and atheists including worshippers of African traditional religion.

Advertisements

“The recent kidnapping of senior seminarians of the Catholic Church in Kaduna state is one of such widespread well-coordinated attacks.

“The four seminarians, between the ages of 18 and 23, were abducted Wednesday night recently from their seminary in Kaduna, in northwestern Nigeria.

“Pius Kanwai, 19; Peter Umenukor, 23; Stephen Amos, 23; and Michael Nnadi, 18, were taken from Good Shepherd Seminary in Kaduna, around 10:30 pm on January 8 by gunmen. Police are searching for the four young men.”

HURIWA lamented that since the gunmen, disguised in military camouflage, broke through the fence surrounding the seminarians’ living quarters and began shooting sporadically, they stole laptops and phones before kidnapping the four young men, the nation’s heads of security forces have yet to make concerted efforts to retrieve these Senior Seminarians from their kidnappers who are armed Islamists.

‘My husband beats me up anytime he likes’-Wife tells court

A Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan on Wednesday dissolved the 15-year- old marriage between one Abiodun Oluwale and husband, Oladipo, over distrust and incessant battery.

Advertisements

The court’s President, Chief Ademola Odunade, while granting the application of Abiodun, the plaintiff, for dissolution of the marriage, held that the court’s decision was in the best interest of the parties, NAN reports.

The court awarded custody of the four children produced by the union to the plaintiff and ordered the defendant to be paying N20,000 as the children’s monthly feeding allowance .

He further ordered the defendant to be responsible for the children’s education needs and upkeep.

In her petition to the court, Abiodun, an estate agent, who lives at Ajeigbe area of Ibadan, said that she was tired of the persistent violence in her home.

“I submitted my entire life to Oladipo at the beginning of our marriage and he toyed with it.

“Oladipo is not a responsible husband not only to me, but also to our four children.

“In fact, I am responsible for the payment of the children ’s school fees, feeding and the house rent.

“When I had a good job, I allowed Oladipo to withdraw freely from my account to the extent that he withdrew all my money some years ago and ran to the United States before he returned empty handed.

“All these did not stop him from beating me up anytime he liked.

“My parents and his have both intervened times without number, but he never turned a new leaf,” Abiodun said.

The respondent, however, prayed the court not to grant his wife’s prayer.

Oladipo, a resident of Elewura-Challenge area of Ibadan, said the major problem in the union was his wife’s penchant for attending church programmes without his permission.

“It is true that Abiodun sometimes assisted me with the payment of house rent, but I only collected 30 per cent of the total sum from her.

“Abiodun is such a stubborn wife, I go to the market to buy food and I care for our children.

“When she went to stay with her sick mother, I was solely responsible for the children’s welfare ,” Oladipo said.
