We  reports that this is coming amidst rising tension over the forthcoming local government election in the State.

This is as many aspirants in Nsukka Council Area, under the platform of the party, have been crying out over the alleged hijack of the process by the party hierarchy, in favour of a particular candidate.

Barely 24 hours ago, some youths in the area also took to the streets, during which some of them were arrested and now being detained at the State CID, Enugu.

Mr. Fabian Onah, PDP chairman in Nsukka LGA, who confirmed the inferno, while speaking to journalists, said he was informed in the morning that part of the building was set ablaze.

He said, “When I got the call, I immediately rushed to the party office to see for myself the level of the inferno and damages done by the incident.

“The target was my office as everything in my office was destroyed by fire.

“All the chairs, tables, documents and other office equipment were destroyed.”

He said that he was told the arsonists scaled the party office, broke up the window blinds, poured petrol, put fire and the office went up inflames

“I wonder what is the intention of those behind putting the PDP office on fire.

“Other parts of the party office were not touched as those behind the crime concentrated in my office where vital documents were stored,” he said.

Nigerians warned to stop drinking garri

The Director of Public Health, Enugu State, Dr Boniface Okolo, has cautioned Nigerians against the consumption of cassava flakes, otherwise known as garri to avoid contacting Lassa fever.

Advertisements

Okolo, who gave the warning in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Saturday in Enugu, said the rats that caused the disease were mostly in contact with Nigerian most popular staple food ‘garri,’ a cassava product.

He added that it was necessary to discourage consumption of soaked garri since it did not require boiled water.

Okolo noted that boiled water could go a long way to kill bacteria caused by pest or rodents in garri.

“It is better that the cassava flakes called garri is used for ‘eba’, because of the use of hot water.

“We in the state health ministry are waging total war against rodents through sensitisation, that is what we are doing to ensure we do not have victim of Lassa fever in the state.

“We are also sensitising the public to ensure that their fruits and raw vegetables are properly washed if they must be consumed them raw and cook to the appropriate temperature.

“The best practices for food storage should be encouraged to prevent epidemic.

”We should always make sure that we use air-tight clean plastic containers to preserve our foodstuff to avoid lassa fever and other diseases,” he said.

NAFDAC: Nigerians speak on use of paracetamol for food preparation

Following recent alert by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on the use of paracetamol tablets in food preparation, some Nigerians have expressed shock and disappointment.

Advertisements

They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews that the news came to them as a rude shock.

Paracetamol is used for the treatment of mild illnesses, moderate pains from headaches, backaches, toothaches, menstrual periods, flu and to reduce fever.

Mrs. Joy Ossai, a housewife, said that though her family mostly eats meals prepared at home, she would create awareness among her friends about the dangers of eating foods prepared with harmful substances.

“I take my time to cook meals; I know people add potash to soften `Pomo’ (cow skin) and other foods while cooking them.

Advertisements

“However, I have never heard of the use of paracetamol tablets.

“I have to caution some people against it; I will post it on my Facebook page and my group chats on the WhatsApp to tell them what is happening,” she said.

Daniel Amadi, a pastor, said that he had never heard of the practice but was worried as to what the consequences was to those who had eaten such in public meals, unknowingly.

He said that he knew that some people used to add a whole bulb of onions into their beans while boiling it to make it soft on time.

“I do it too and it works for me. I will stop eating out; I’ll suggest people try and plan their meals so that they can prepare their foods themselves to avoid eating things that will harm them,” he said.

Hannah Momoh, a student, said she would stop eating foods cooked outside her home to avoid getting sick.

Advertisements

She said: “I was fond of eating out before. Since I heard that some food vendors usually add Paracetamol tablets to their food during preparation, I had become worried. I have to be more conscious of what I eat outside my home now.’’

Mrs. Vivian Monday, a caterer who is popular for selling: beans, bread and `Pomo’, advised that people should always exercise patience while cooking.

Monday also said that people should adopt other methods that could aid food preparation instead of adding Paracetamol tablets to their food to quicken the process.

She said, “When cooking beans, do not add salt to the first batch of the water.

“When it is dry, you can then add salt and more water, cover your pot and allow it to cook; add as much water as it needs to get soft.

“For `Pomo’, I soak it first in salt water and sieve, then I fry it dry. When I need it, I just add it to what I am preparing and allow it to cook until it is soft,” she said.

Nsikak Udo-Etuk, a pharmacist at Whitewood Pharmacy, FESTAC Town, however, advised that people should use only approved resins or local ones such as garlic and onions to soften foods during preparation.

“Paracetamol is a medicine and it is not supposed to be used in cooking; it is quite poisonous when it gets into hot water.

“If combined with meat fibre to form a toxic substance, it can be very harmful to the internal organs of the body and can lead to cancer or other terminal problems,” he said.

NAN reports that NAFDAC in its alert cautioned members of the public, especially restaurant operators, to desist from the illegal practice of using Paracetamol tablets in food preparation.

According to the Agency, the practice may result in serious health consequences, including liver damage, kidney failure and untimely death.

NAFDAC, however, advised the public to use approved table salts, in moderation, to tenderise meat by soaking it in water for about 30 minutes before cooking.

2023: Southeast APC group comes hard on Tinubu’s coordinator

The convener of the Southeast Integrity Group and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr. Chinedu Ogbuagu has dismissed as “ridiculous and absurd” a reported claim by the national cordinator of TNN (Tinubu-Not-Negotiable 2023) Muri Okunola that APC will lose if the Igbos get 2023 presidential ticket.

Advertisements

Ogbuagu, who spoke to journalists on Saturday, said such a claim was not consistent with the group’s claimed belief in national unity.

Mutiu Okunola had stated that “the only reason Nigeria is still together is power rotation. Power rotation is sacrosanct for unity of Nigeria.”

However, Dr. Ogbuagu wondered, “Did anyone contemplate that power must rotate to Tinubu? Power rotation is intended to be between North and South. Granted Tinubu is from the South to which power, having resided in the North from 2015 to 2023 must rotate.

“But is Tinubu not from the same Southern geo-political zone that produced president (Obasanjo) 1999 to 2007 and vice president (Osinbajo)2015 to 2023.”

Advertisements

He recalled that each time the South has produced the President, they did so with the massive support of the Southeast, despite the fact it was the only zone that had neither produced the president nor vice-president.

Ogbuagu while attributing Okunola’s stance to “greed and insensitivity” said, “every selfless and patriotic Nigerian knows that presidential power must not only rotate to the South in 2023, but should also be zoned to the Southeast geopolitical zone that has not produced a president, not even vice president since 1999.

“As APC members, we of the Southeast Intergrity Group obviously want a Southeast APC member to become that president.”

Dr Ogbuagu dismissed as “self-serving and distorted political and electoral calculations” of groups like TNN 2023 and asserted that to the contrary, “Southeast voters remain the largest, though latent voting block spread accross all states of the federation.”

He opined that this latency will be brought to life with a presidential candidate of Southeast extraction.

“Without President Buhari’s 12 million vote bank as a starting point, our dear party APC will need to unearth and mobilize the millions of latent Igbo votes spread accross the country.

Advertisements

“Okunola and those who share his jaundiced narrative should take a cue from the historical swearing in of Governor Hope Uzodinma as an APC governor on 15th January 2020, exactly 50 years after the end of the Biafra War as an indication that the hand of God is in a southeasterner becoming the flagbearer and winning the presidency for our great party in 2023.

“That Governor Uzodinma was sworn in at Owerri, the last capital of Biafra speaks volumes. Let us end the war in truth with a Southeasterner as the next president of Nigeria,” he advised.

Imo: I pity those celebrating Uzodinma’s victory at Supreme Court – Ihedioha

Emeka Ihedioha has said he has pity for those celebrating the verdict of the Supreme Court, which sacked him as governor of Imo State.

Advertisements

Speaking with members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at his Abuja residence on Saturday, Ihedioha said the judgment was more about the country’s democracy than himself.

The Supreme Court, on Tuesday sacked Ihedioha as Imo State Governor and ordered the swearing-in of Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ihedioha, however, admits he is still in shock over the verdict.

“The elections in Imo were closely monitored, well advertised and everybody in Nigeria followed it through. The results were very clear, the electoral umpire still has the results.

Advertisements

“It is not about Emeka Ihedioha. It is not about Imo State. It is about the future of our country and democracy. It’s about what do we do tomorrow. .. I am calm and we are calm, and that is why you see in Imo, there is calmness.

“The calmness is coming out of shock, it is coming of disbelief. It is coming out of the fact that people are saying, let us still see, can this be possible? We are waiting for answers and I believe there will be answers.

“This is not the time to celebrate. I pity anyone who is celebrating that sad event. If anyone is celebrating, that person is not a student of democracy,” he said.

PDP governors lobbying to travel with Buhari -Timi Frank

[ad_1]

..Says party’s planned protest medicine after death
A political activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Timi Frank, has said that governors of the People Democratic Party (PDP) are the major problem of opposition party in the country even as some of them were lobbying to travel with General Muhammadu Buhari.

Advertisements
Frank said aside governor Wike of Rivers state, so many of other opposition party governors are daily lobbying to be in the good books of General Buhari, hence they don’t talk on national issues affecting Nigerians negatively.
Reacting to a media report that the PDP was planning to stage a nationwide protest against the Supreme Court ruling in Imo, Frank said the move is belated.
“PDP’s planned protest is medicine after death, why didn’t they protest when the former CJN Onnogen was forcefully removed from office? Why didn’t they protest when the last presidential election was rigged in favour of APC by INEC and the Army? Why didn’t they protest when Supreme Court unjustly threw out presidential election appeal? Today Nigerians are seeing the result of the forceful removal of Onnogen from office; it’s a bit late for PDP to protest.”
The Bayelsa born activist specifically condemned in strong term the Abia state governor, who was seen on Friday travelling to London with General Buhari at a time his colleague in Imo (Emeka) was removed as governor.
In a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Saturday, Frank said it is shameful that PDP has 16 governors and only one or two is committed to the cause of the party.
“Some PDP governors are the problem of Nigeria, some of them go to the extent of lobbying the cabal to travel out with the President so as to be on his good books, they are selfish, corrupt, over ambitious and shameless.
“Some of them betrayed the PDP during the last presidential election, and gave the APC 25% in their states in return for not being prosecuted after they leave office and to win their 2nd term.”
According to Frank, a sitting PDP governor said: “If you say you dey there (APC), know I am already there. If you go to APC, I am an APC member. If you go to PDP, I am there”, what did the PDP as a party say or do? The PDP as a party could not caution or penalize him and now they want to protest?
“Apart from the governor of Rivers state Nyesom Wike and sometimes, the Benue state governor Samuel Ortom, other PDP governors are PDP by the day and APC by night; they fraternize with the APC thereby rendering PDP incapacitated and unable to function properly and cannot play the role of an effective opposition.
“Nigerians are being taken for a ride by the APC administration and the PDP can’t do anything to checkmate government because most of the PDP members and especially some governors are compromised, otherwise they could have fought Buhari the same way the opposition governors fought Jonathan, whereas those governors refused to compromise during Jonathan’s tenure.
“Nigerians should observe that apart from Governor Wike and Governor Ortom, no other PDP governor dares to criticize Buhari and even make any statement about national issues. If there is any governor that Buhari and the APC would have loved to remove, it is Governor Wike; this is because he is not PDP by the day and APC by night, which is the reason why he has the support of his people and despite all the persecution by the federal government, he still stands tall.”
While urging other PDP governors to emulate Governor Wike so that posterity will judge them well, Frank said: “It is better for these governors to decamp to APC so Nigerians and the world can see them for who they truly are, after all once you decamp to APC; all your sins (Looting and corruption) are forgiven.
“To show you how incompetent some of the PDP governors are, the Abia state PDP governor Okezie Ikpeazu, flew to London with Buhari and some APC members in the presidential jet, barely 3 days after a PDP governor colleague of his from the same South-east was robbed through the Supreme Court and his seat given to APC. He was seen smiling and grinning from ear to ear like a child that just tasted chocolate for the first time in his life.
“Instead of telling APC the truth, Ikpeazu is fraternizing with them the same day the PDP was having its NEC meeting, He abandoned the meeting and flew with Buhari to London, as that is more important to him than attending PDP meeting, the party that gave him a platform to become governor.
“The wicked flee when no man pursueth, no amount of fraternizing with Buhari and the APC can save any looting governor when the day of reckoning comes.
“Nigerians are helpless today at the hands of APC because some PDP governors have compromised for their selfish interest but they should remember that they are not God, only God knows how all these will pan out tomorrow,” Timi Frank said.

Eco: Nigerian traders send message to Buhari govt, ECOWAS

The National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS), has advised the Federal Government and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to address corruption and regional cross border trade challenges before adopting ECO Currency.

Advertisements

Mr. Ken Ukaoha, NANTS President, gave the advice on Saturday, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

According to him, the general problem facing the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) must also be addressed.

Ukaoha said that ECOWAS and Nigeria must seek to address the myriad of challenges facing regional cross border trade such as intimidation, harassment of traders, bribery and corruption.

Eight West African countries had agreed to change the name of their common currency to Eco.

Advertisements

Ukaoha, however, decried corruption among uniformed border officials, unnecessary delays of goods, and lack of common trade policy by Nigeria.

Ukaoha, a trade advocate said that though the ECO would be beneficial but the Member States must firstly meet the set convergence criteria to ensure the effective security and preservation of macroeconomic policy environment.

He also noted that Nigeria could not pursue common currency with speed when it did not have a common trade policy.

Ukaoha, also a legal practitioner said that the causative factors behind the closure of Nigerian land borders should equally be addressed.

“Several infractions and violations of extant ECOWAS Protocols by Member States against the citizens such as the closure of Nigerian trader’s shops in Ghana is a priority,” he said.

He said that costs and benefits analysis of a single currency must be undertaken and presented to the wider ECOWAS public to secure buy-in support and ownership of the process and outcomes.

Advertisements

“We are supporting the idea but we are of a strong opinion that it is not a priority for ECOWAS and Nigeria at this time because there are conditions that should be fulfilled,” he said.

Ukaoha said that though the single currency would be beneficial, but it held strongly that ECOWAS should reorder its priorities first while Nigeria should strengthen its trade issues for good implementation.

“The single currency is beneficial to Nigeria and ECOWAS. It is also beneficial to the traders and entire private sector for ease of transactions, increased commerce, productivity and economic development,” he said.

Liverpool vs Man United: Jamie Carragher predicts shocking scoreline of EPL clash

Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher, has predicted a shocking scoreline between Manchester United and Jurgen Klopp’s side when both teams clash in the Premier League.

Advertisements

Liverpool will host Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men at Anfield on Sunday evening,

Liverpool head to the game after beating Tottenham 1-0 in their last encounter, while Man United won Norwich City 4-0.

But Carragher has now backed the Reds to beat the Red Devils 3-1.

“I am confident Liverpool will win the game. Mourinho, in his first couple games at Anfield with United, made it really difficult for Liverpool,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

Advertisements

“But in the last one Liverpool really dominated and came out on top in Mourinho’s final game at United.

“I think Ole is not quite as pragmatic as Mourinho, so I don’t see it being a shut-out kind of game, and I think the tactic for United will be very similar to what it was against Manchester City in December, playing deep and trying to hit on the counter-attack.

“They were absolutely devastating that day, and if they produce a similar sort of performance, Liverpool could have major problems.

“But there is a gulf between the two clubs, and if Liverpool play anywhere near what they are capable of, they will come out on top.

“I’m confident of a Liverpool win. I think 3-1 Liverpool. And if that is the score, we’ve got the pundit-camera on us in the commentary box, and hopefully we’ll see similar scenes to what we saw at Old Trafford when Adam Lallana got the equaliser!”

The kick-off time for the match is 5:30pm.

Nigerians currently pauper, unhappy, lost faith in govt – Oyegun laments

[ad_1]

John Oyegun, former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has lamented that Nigeria was currently not working.

Advertisements

Oyegun maintained that Nigerians were increasingly becoming unhappy with the state of things.

Speaking at the 17th edition of the Daily Trust Dialogue in Abuja, Oyegun lamented that the Federal Governmemt was not addressing what was making “people poorer and unhappy.”

The APC Chairman, however, admitted that Nigeria has been growing in the last 20 years.

Oyegun stated that there was hardly a single administration that has not left office unpopular and unheralded in the past twenty years.

Advertisements

Oyegun said: “I borrow from what the former governor of Borno State (Kashim Shettima) said. He passionately appealed that we must try to make Nigeria work.

“Why is Nigeria not working? At the risk of being misinterpreted, let me make the point that we have been growing in those 20 years, every year and with every administration.

“I dare to even say that there is hardly a single administration in those 20 years that has not left office unpopular and unheralded.

“We have never asked ourselves the question why are our people getting increasingly unhappy with their governors within those 20 years.

“Why are they getting poorer, why are they losing hope, those are the questions I think pose a threat to our democracy because today we are beginning to hear rumblings that we didn’t hear before.”
