The bodies of the soldiers, which showed signs of mutilation, were recovered by the Joint Task Force led by Major General Jamal Abdussalam, the General Officer Commanding 6 Division, Nigerian Army, in the Okuama community.

Among the casualties were a commanding officer, two Majors, one Captain, 12 soldiers, and one civilian, all of whom lost their lives in an ambush on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

The conflict stemmed from a longstanding communal land dispute between neighboring communities, escalating since January 27, 2024, when youths from Okoloba reportedly ambushed and killed three Okuama youths – Igho Meshack, Godspower Awusa, and Okiemute Agbabuleke – as they returned from Okwagbe.

In a message directly penned by the Director-General, Joseph Ochogwu, the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) highlighted the detrimental impact of recent events on the country’s reputation.

It is a sad incident happening particularly at a time when President Bola Tinubu is actively addressing security challenges.

Also, Ochogwu emphasised the need to appreciate the efforts of security personnel in safeguarding the nation rather than witnessing their tragic loss of life.

He expressed the firm stance of IPCR against the recent incident involving the killing of 16 soldiers in the autonomous community of Okuama, Ewu Kingdom, situated in the Ughelli South Area of Delta State.

The statement issued by the Director-General (DG) highlights a pressing issue facing many nations: the challenge of maintaining peace and security amid acts of violence.

“Regardless of individual differences or regional affiliations, all citizens should rally behind the armed forces in their efforts to safeguard the nation.

“Recognising and commending the bravery and sacrifice of security personnel is essential to boost their morale and encourage continued dedication to national security”.
