People in places of power are beginning to receive prophecies on positions that they want to occupy.

The Deputy Speaker, Idris Wase, is one of such persons with prophecies about why he should be the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Three days before the election of National Assembly presiding officers, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu are about to get a deja vu.

In fact the scenario 2015 is about to happen again.

Attempts to persuade other opponents in the contest to withdraw in favour of the supported candidates — Godswill Akpabio, Jubrin Barau, Tajudeen Abbas, and Benjamin Kalu — have proven ineffective.

In the House, Deputy Speaker Idris Wase has refused to withdraw from the campaign.

The Predictions

He informed his colleagues in the valedictory session, that their prognostication on his candidacy was correct.

He said: “I’d like to thank my political leaders, one of whom was Solomon Lar.

“When I was running for office in 2007, I went to him and he predicted how many times I’d come to this assembly.

“And he said that the next time I come back, I’ll be the one to speak. Insha Allah, I will be the speaker of this chamber.” Wase said

Former Governor Abdulaziz Yari has been gathering traction among senators, and there are rumors that he and Orji Uzor Kalu may form a combined ticket.

Kalu recently acknowledged that he and Yari were still talking about the race.

Yari was in Daura four days ago, paying tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He was there with 22 other senators-elect. And he has continually argued against the party’s announced zoning model.

Can they pull off a surprise?

Tinubu Chooses persuasion

President Tinubu has declined to overtly order parliamentarians to do his bidding, instead, he is attempting to persuade lawmakers-elect to see things his way.

He spoke with members-elect on Wednesday, but he did not ask them to vote for anyone in particular.

The President also met with G7 lawmakers in the House, but Wase was not present.

Similarly, during a meeting with traditional rulers, President Tinubu informed the monarchs that he was ready to work with whoever wins Tuesday’s election.

The president’s contradictory signals are raising alarm within the Joint Task, the organisation coordinating Abbas’ campaign.

However, it appears that Mr Tinubu was able to convince a number of MPs through the discussions.

Amobi Ogah, a Labour Party member-elect who attended the meeting, praised Tinubu and declared it the “best day of my life”.

Except for Wase, the impetus looks to have shifted back to Abbas and Kalu in recent weeks.

Current Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila appears unwilling to take any risks.

He explained his decision to wait until the election on Tuesday before accepting his job as Chief of Staff.
