Nigerians vote in Governorship/State Assembly Elections

Today, March 19, 2023, Nigerians are eagerly waiting for the results of the governorship and State House of Assembly elections, which is riddled with cases of violence vote buying and other irregularities.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says collation centres will open in Lagos, Ogun and Kaduna states Sunday morning.

03:15PM: PDP’s Seyi Makinde Has Been Re-Elected In Oyo State

Compared to other states, Oyo State had a quite peaceful election, and Seyi Makinde will rule for another four years.

Governor Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been declared the winner of the Oyo State governorship election.

The collation of results from all the 33 LGAs puts him in a lead far ahead of his opposition.

Mr Makinde won in 31 local government areas with a total of 563,753 votes which is about double the votes of his closest challenger, Teslim Folarin of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

03:15PM: Sanwo-Olu Leads In Lagos Governorship Polls

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State is closer to retaining the governorship of Lagos State for the next four years.

With the collation of result still ongoing, what we know so far is that he is leading in 15 of the 20 local governments that have been announced.

08:45AM: Voting begins in VGC, Lagos For Governorship and State House of Assembly elections.

Elections are holding in 10 polling units in VGC.

It is one place you will love to vote. Residents who vote at the VGC Park often turn voting sessions to party time.

However, turnout is low.

08:15AM: Voters gather in VGC, Lagos to vote in rescheduled governorship and State House of Assembly elections.

INEC officials are also on ground.

INEC had moved the polls to Sunday after issues were reported at the polling unit.

07:15AM: Kaduna result collation coming in slowly. Kaduan South Local Government Area still in progress. There are 13 electoral wards in Kaduna and only six wards have turned in results.

07:00AM: Collation center in Ogun State will open at 9:00AM and in Lagos at 11:00AM.

SUNDAY, MARCH 19

03:35PM: INEC Postpones Governorship and State Assembly elections in Kwande East and West constituency in Benue State.

The postponement was announced by INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Professor Samuel Egwu. He told journalists in Makurdi the capital of the state that there was an error noticed.

According to him, there was a swapping of ballot papers meant for Kwande East to Kwande West.

The INEC will reprint the ballot papers for both the governorship and the two State House of Assembly seats in Kwande before elections will hold in the area.

03:17PM: Slight drama in a polling unit in Zaria Road, Jos North, as party agents insist INEC officials must cancel unused ballot papers before sorting and counting of votes.

02:54PM: Voters are waiting at polling units for vote counting. This is one of the strategies voters use in monitoring their votes.

2:50PM: Voting ends at a polling unit in Ibafo market square, Lagos. After voting at the polling unit, electoral officials began striking out ballot papers that are not used.

12:45PM: The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar described the governorship and State House of Assembly election as a crucial democratic process towards a sustainable future for Adamawa State.

He voted in Yola, the capital of the State.

After voting, he wrote: “Proud to participate in this crucial democratic process towards a sustainable future for our dear state. Let’s come together and make our votes count”.

12:02PM: In Benin City, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo Sate casts vote in Unit 19, Oredo Ward 4, at Empkpae Primary School in the capital city.

He says there is low voter’s turnout. Also, he wants security agencies to lower the heavy level of surveillance in the election.

11:19PM: The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, votes in Governorship election.

After fasting his vote he wrote: “At about 11.20am this morning, I exercised my franchise by casting my vote in my polling unit.

“My dear wife Margaret also voted.

“Our votes must count in order for Nigeria’s democracy to flourish”.

“I encourage every registered Nigerian voter, who have not yet voted to go and do so.

11:10AM: Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has casts his vote at polling unit 006 ward 15, in  Lagos Island.

The wife of the governor (First Lady of Lagos State), Mrs Ibironke Sanwo-Olu also voted at the same polling unit.

10:40AM: The situation around the the Lagos Island polling unites 006 and 007 is getting tense. The numbers are increasing, as people continue to troop in from all angles.

The governor of the state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu is expected to vote here. However, he is yet to arrive.

10:20AM: The voting process at Ibafo police station is peaceful. However, voters’ turn out is low compared to the February 25 General election.

10:15AM: A popular Nigerian actress, Chioma Akpotha, says thugs with knives and other weapons attacked her at her polling unit,

Chioma shared a video of herself driving out of the area, some where in Lekki, Lagos, to escape the attack.

10:00AM: In polling unit 7, Ward Ajegunle, Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area, voting is ongoing peacefully.

However, a vehicle parked right in front of the polling unit distributing incentives.

Voters and even INEC officials left their civic responsibilities at that moment and raced to the driver of the vehicle to receive their share of bottle water and soft drink in a white customized nylon bag.

Labour Party’s Candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes Vivour Votes

09:45AM: The governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Gbadebo Rhodes Vivour, votes. In the February 25 election, the Labour party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, defeated Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Talking to journalists after voting, he said: “It is very unfortunate that Lagos State has been under the rule of people that only bring about, Thuggery and violence.

“When they had the opportunity to do well for people create a voter group that will be happy to vote for them. But they always choose violence and thuggery.

“And by God’s grace, by the end of today, their reign of violence and thuggery in Lagos State will end”.

06:00AM: Residents of New Oko oba Area of Lagos State woke up on election morning to see vehicle inside a shop. The accident occurred in the Nigeria.

The owner of the vehicle had abandoned the vehicle.
