A convoy of members of the Labour Party, which Mr Peter Obi belongs to, came under attack in the eastern part of Nigeria.
There have been series of attacks in the region of late, with one leaving three police officers dead.
This time, the convoy of the Labour Party was attacked in Enugu State.
The party members were in a Sienna bus driven by Barr Oyibo Chukwu, a Labour Party candidate for the Enugu East Senatorial District.
Suddenly gunmen launched an attack on the convoy and at least five passengers are said to have been killed.
The incident happened around Ekotu, Amechi Awkunanaw in Enugu South Local Government Area, Enugu State late Wednesday.
An eyewitness stated that the bus which the candidate uses for his campaign was set ablaze by the gunmen, burning the passengers beyond recognition.

It is not yet confirmed if the candidate was among the victims.
Similarly, another politician was attacked in the same state.
This time, it was a campaign bus of Honourable Ofor Chukwuegbo, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the House of Representatives in the Enugu North/South Federal Constituency.
Reports say the vehicle was attacked by thugs, who killed the driver and set the bus on fire.
The police are yet to make an official statement regarding these incidents as of the time of filing this report.
