Ekweremadu: 10 Things You Should Know About Convicted Senator

Nigeria’s former Deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, is currently topping charts of trending issues in Nigeria. 

This is because of the report that he has been found guilty of organ trafficking by a United Kingdom’s court.

Normally, one would think that only ordinary Nigerians are guilty of earning the country a bad name when they travel abroad.

But, Ekweremadu has put his name in the history books. He will be remembered as one of the politicians that dragged the country’s name to the mud.

Evidently a testament to the nation’s ailing healthcare sector.

The Exploit

The Nigerian politician, his wife, Beatrice, their daughter, Sonia and Obinna Obeta, a doctor involved in the case conspired to bring a young man to London to exploit him for his kidney.

The jury found that Ekwerenmadu and others mentioned were guilty.

They will face the punishment for their offence.

The curt has not pronounced the punishment for the crime.

1. Ike Ekeremadu was born on 12 May 1962, at Amachara Mpu in the Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State.

2. Ekweremmadu has served in the Senate since June 2003 and is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

3. In 2005, Ike Ekweremadu was beaten in the race for President of the Senate by Senator Kenechukwu Nnamani.

4. He was the Deputy President of the Senate for three (3) consecutive times (6th, 7th, and 8th).

5. He holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in law from the University of Nigeria and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1987.

6. In September 2003, he was appointed as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information.

7. In September 2009, he was appointed to lead the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

8. On 17 August 2019, Ekweremadu attended the Second Annual Cultural Festival and Convention organized by Ndi-Igbo Germany in Nuremberg.

He was attacked by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB.

9. On 23 June 2022, Ekweremadu was charged alongside his wife, his daughter Sonia, and Dr Obinna Obeta in UK Magistrate’s Court.

They conspired to arrange the travel of a 21-year-old from Lagos into the UK in order to harvest organs

10. On 23 March 2023 Ekweremadu, his wife, and Dr Obinna Obeta were convicted of conspiring to exploit the man for his kidney.
