The increase in kidnapping in Nigeria is sweeping through different states, highlighting the wave of hunger in the most populous nation in africa. In fact, it calls for immediate intervention.
As security forces continue their battle against this menace, citizens must also understand the need to be security conscious and always on alert.
If only Hon Tony Aziegbemi, the Edo State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was security conscious, perhaps he would have noticed that his car was being trailed by kidnappers.
Or perhaps he did notice them but decided to play deaf ears.
On that fateful day, at about 11 p.m., Aziegbemi left a night meeting in the government house in Benin.
It was a successful meeting and the chairman had hit the road with the hope of reuniting with his family.
ut that desire ended some metres away from his home.
Action Time
Quietly, in their two Toyota Corolla cars, the abductors trailed Aziegbemi.
But few metres from his residence, the kidnappers swung into action.
They overtook his jeep along Odaro Street off Country Home Road, close to his house.
The Edo State Police spokesperson, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the incident.
Nwabuzor said the incident fell under the New Etete Police Division.
He said: “That is confirmed, it is in the jurisdiction of New Etete Police Division, also known as Godwin Abbe Police Station, that is where it happened.
“The Commissioner of Police has given marching orders to the tactical teams of the operatives.
“They have been ordered to go after the hoodlums.
“We pray that by the grace of God all hands are on deck and we will be able to rescue him unhurt”.
The Abduction
Aziegbemi’s driver also narrated how his boss was kidnapped.
He said: “When we left the government house heading home at about 11 pm.

“I noticed a car trailing us, so I decided to take another diversion.
“We never knew they were kidnappers.
“A few minutes later, the same cars appeared behind us at a speed breaker point and blocked our car in the front.
“Then immediately, the gunmen pointed guns at us and ordered our chairman to enter their car and took him away”.
