The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, says beyond June 12 there is more to democracy that Nigerians should know about.
According to him, democracy is more than just holding elections or having a government in place.
Mutfwang made this point through his spokesman, Gyang Bere, in honour of the nation’s Democracy Day.
He said democracy was also about ensuring that the people’s views were heard and their needs, particularly their security, were satisfied.
“Plateau State Executive Governor, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has congratulated the Plateau people on the occasion of 2023 Democracy Day.
“He emphasised the need to embrace democratic values such as tolerance, respect for human rights, and the rule of law.”
Also, the Governor highlighted democracy as the ideal form of governance since it focuses on enhancing residents’ well-being and giving the people the power to choose their leaders.

Mutfwang took advantage of the occasion to remind locals of the value of this system of government and the necessity to defend its principles.
Respect For Human Rights
“Democracy is about more than just elections; it is about the rule of law, respect for human rights, and citizen participation in decision-making.”
He highlighted that the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election was a dark period in Nigeria’s history.
Furthermore, he calls for the defense of democratic principles and respect for the decision of the people.
Also the Governor stressed the need for individuals to continue to work for a “fair, just, and inclusive” society in which every person has a “voice and a stake” in a better future.
“Ponder on the state’s path and be grateful to God for being alive.
“We must resolve to live together for the sake of our beloved state’s peace, unity, and progress,” he tells residents of the state.
