Insecurity: Did Nigeria Police Stage Adelabu Family Rescue?

A fresh wave of controversy has trailed the recent rescue operation by the Nigeria Police Force in Ibadan, Oyo State, after some Nigerians on social media began questioning whether the dramatic operation that freed relatives of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, was genuine or staged.

Insecurity: Did Nigeria Police Stage Adelabu Family Rescue?

The operation, which reportedly led to the safe rescue of Mrs Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul and her 12-year-old twin sons, Peter and Paul, has now become the centre of a heated national debate, one that is less about the victims and more about trust in Nigeria’s security system.

A Rescue That Sparked Doubt Instead Of Relief

According to police reports, the victims were rescued during a late-night operation on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at about 7:30 pm, bringing an end to days of fear following their abduction in Ibadan.

Mrs John-Paul, who is said to be the younger sister of Adebayo Adelabu, was rescued alongside her children in what authorities described as a successful tactical intervention.

But almost immediately after video footage of the operation surfaced online, a section of Nigerians began raising uncomfortable questions.

Instead of celebration, skepticism took over timelines.

Some users openly alleged that the entire operation may have been staged, describing it as “too clean, too convenient, and too perfectly recorded” to be real.

The Social Media Firestorm

The claims quickly escalated, with critics demanding transparency and proof that the rescue was not scripted for public perception.

One particular user, Okafor Samuel, became central to the debate after questioning the authenticity of the operation and suggesting it could have been orchestrated.

His comments triggered a wave of reactions, dividing Nigerians into two camps: those demanding evidence from the police, and those insisting the allegations were reckless and dangerous.

Omokri Enters The Conversation

As the debate intensified, Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, stepped in with a strongly worded response, challenging critics to back up their claims with evidence.

Omokri insisted that anyone alleging the rescue was staged must be prepared to prove it, especially since such accusations border on criminal misinformation.

He also referenced reports that some suspects linked to the kidnapping were arrested alive, arguing that investigators already have verifiable leads that contradict the “staged operation” narrative.

According to him, spreading unverified claims about security operations not only undermines public institutions but could also amount to a punishable offence.

A Bigger Trust Problem In Nigeria’s Security Narrative

Beyond the online arguments, the controversy has once again exposed a deeper issue: the growing distrust between citizens and security agencies.

For some Nigerians, years of insecurity, inconsistent official statements, and unresolved kidnapping cases have created a climate where even successful rescue operations are viewed with suspicion.

For others, the viral claims reflect a dangerous trend where social media narratives can quickly erase facts and turn genuine security achievements into public doubt.

Between Victims And Viral Doubts

While the rescued family attempts to recover from trauma, the public conversation has shifted elsewhere, into arguments, accusations, and counter-accusations over what really happened during the operation.

As of now, the police have maintained that the rescue was real and successful, while critics continue to demand more transparency.

What remains clear is that in today’s Nigeria, even a rescue mission no longer ends with relief alone, it now ends in controversy, suspicion, and a national debate over truth itself.
