Nigeria’s federal government has rolled out a sweeping upgrade to the welfare, allowances, and retirement benefits of public servants, signaling a major shift in how civil service compensation is structured.

Tinubu Government Increases Allowances, Welfare And Exit Package Of Nigerian Workers

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, confirmed that the reforms—approved under the administration of Bola Tinubu—will apply to employees on both the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS).

According to Walson-Jack, the updated framework revises nearly all allowances captured in the Public Service Rules.

The adjustments are designed to benefit workers across every grade level, ensuring both junior and senior officers see improved earnings.

A standout feature of the reform is the introduction of a 100 percent Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) for civil servants attending officially approved training programmes.

Notably, eligibility is no longer tied to travel. Staff who participate in training within their duty location—for instance, Abuja-based officers attending sessions in the city—will still receive full DTA.

Beyond active service benefits, the government has also introduced a new retirement package for workers under the Contributory Pension Scheme.

Effective January 1, 2026, retirees will receive a lump sum equivalent to their total emoluments at the point of exit, in addition to their regular pension entitlements.

The initiative is aimed at ensuring greater financial security and dignity after service.

In addition, authorities have activated the Employee Compensation Scheme, a policy designed to provide financial support to workers or their families in cases of work-related injury, disability, or death.

Overall, the reforms are expected to significantly raise take-home pay, strengthen worker protection, and improve morale across Nigeria’s public service.
