In 2025, Nigeria’s telecom sector drove economic growth, raising the ICT sector’s contribution to the nation’s real GDP to 10.07%.

This figure represents a steady rise from 9.79% in 2024, according to the latest Q4 2025 data released by the National Bureau of Statistics.

Telecom Drive ICT Growth

The ICT sector covers Telecommunications and Information Services, Publishing, Motion Picture, Sound Recording, Music Production, and Broadcasting.

Notably, telecoms dominates the sector, contributing 7.29% of the total, while the other activities together add less than 3%.

Record-Breaking Sector Growth

The sector recorded remarkable growth.

In the fourth quarter of 2025, ICT expanded by 26.34% year-on-year, up sharply from 17.97% in the same period of 2024.

Moreover, quarter-on-quarter growth reached 19.58%, and overall expansion for the year hit 24.96%, nearly double the 12.68% recorded in 2024.

In addition, nominal GDP contribution rose to 9.19% in Q4 2025 from 8.55% a year earlier, while real-term growth increased 7.55% year-on-year.

Policy Support Fuels Expansion

Experts link the boom to deliberate policy support.

Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr Aminu Maida, explained that the Commission and the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy are implementing policies to push telecoms’ GDP contribution to 25%.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s overall GDP grew 4.07% year-on-year in Q4 2025, improving on 3.98% in Q3 2025.

Consequently, ICT’s strong performance, led by telecoms, confirms its role as the backbone of Nigeria’s economic expansion and signals a promising future.
