Airlines in Nigeria must now make air travel easier for passengers with disabilities.
On January 30, 2026, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) directed all domestic carriers to introduce a mandatory special needs assistance option in their ticket booking systems.

Airlines Lead Accessibility Changes
Consequently, travellers can now request support before booking, reducing stress and avoiding delays at airports.
Smooth Travel For Passengers
Furthermore, passengers will no longer wait until check-in to receive assistance, giving them greater control over their journey.
In addition, airlines must actively ask whether anyone in a booking party requires help during flights or at airport facilities.
Importantly, the NCAA warned that airlines who fail to comply within seven days will face regulatory enforcement under Nigeria’s aviation rules.
This move follows the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023, which require airlines to protect Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM) and passengers with disabilities.

Overcoming Barriers
For people living with disabilities, inaccessible public spaces and last-minute travel support often create barriers.
Moreover, these challenges extend to education, healthcare, employment, and public transport, limiting independence and opportunities.
In Lagos, authorities announced a plan in April 2025 to issue special number plates for persons with disabilities, but the initiative has seen little progress.
By introducing pre-booking assistance requests, the NCAA aims to make air travel safer, smoother, and more inclusive.
Ultimately, passengers can plan ahead, enjoy a less stressful journey, and travel with dignity and confidence.
Overall, this change strengthens independence and ensures equal access for travellers who have historically faced significant barriers.
