Digital passport users will face a slow weekend from midnight on Friday, 12 December, until 6:00 am on Sunday, 14 December (GMT), the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) will perform a major system upgrade.

During this period, users may notice slower responses, limited access, or temporary interruptions in some services.

Digital passport users will face a slow weekend from midnight on Friday, 12 December, until 6:00 am on Sunday, 14 December (GMT)

According to NIS, the maintenance will improve the platform’s speed, security, and reliability.

System Upgrade To Boost Speed And Security

Meanwhile, technical teams will work around the clock to restore full functionality.

At the same time, support channels—including email, social media, and contact centres—will stay open to assist users who encounter issues.

Faster Digital Passport, Higher Costs

This upgrade fits into a larger effort to modernise passport services across Nigeria.

For instance, in September 2025, NIS opened a centralised digital passport personalisation system in partnership with IRISMAT Technologies Limited.

The new facility produces up to 5,000 passports daily, a huge jump from the few hundred previously.

Moreover, machines there print 1,000 passports per hour, helping NIS move closer to its goal of one-week passport delivery.

However, the improvements come with higher costs.

Since September 1, a 32-page passport valid for five years now costs ₦100,000, while a 64-page passport valid for ten years sells for ₦200,000—double the previous rates.

Therefore, while the weekend may bring temporary delays, these upgrades promise Nigerians a smoother, faster, and more reliable passport service in the long term.
